As I wrote last month, this is exactly what public health experts have warned against doing, given the possibility of a surge in cases driven by new coronavirus variants. While there is reason to be hopeful—vaccines are here—now isn’t the time to let our guard down, they said. In fact, they told me, easing restrictions now could give the virus even more opportunity to accumulate dangerous mutations.
|
Yeah, we may or may not have new strains, but we do have a plague that is racking up concerning mutations.
The GOP long ago became unmoored from reality, but magical thinking in the time of covid has killed tens of thousands Americans.

Republican Congress people abuse proxy voting because they are venal pieces of shit
Obviously, Cheney is a Republican rightwing asshole, but these days anything less than completely unmoored is RINO

so I found the numbers for Marshall sort of interesting because what it says not about money but what it says about time.
When he went to college with an 898 tuition and 3.35 minimum wage, he had to work just over 5 hours a week for the year to afford his tuition. Maybe he worked just the summer. He could have earned that tuition by working 20 hours a week during the summer and 0 during the year. You can see how just a bit of work could pay for college.
Meanwhile at 10k and 7.25, that's over 26 hours a week for a modern student. If they work 40 hours a week during the summer, they can work only 21 hours a week during the school year.
and this all assumes of course that they student has no other costs that have to be paid.
basically when old assholes worked their way through school, it was a part time or summer job, and in modern times you are looking at a full time job to pay for school.
Over the decades is it any wonder that student debt has exploded?

According to the nonpartisan Brennan Center for Justice at New York University, there are already 253 such bills in 43 states and counting.

That type of generational essentialism thing is pretty effective clickbait.

I'm kind of kidding about the essentialism thing, but it is clickbait. It's like how the media started framing boring market trend stories as "Millennials are killing..." and everyone would get all up in arms identifying with their assigned consumer horoscopes, every single time. Literally stories about paper napkins and fast casual restaurant chains that by all rights would have been buried as the boring business news they are, but by framing them that way, they'd get reposted for days and days, and then the same media outlets would get to milk it even more with new 'think pieces' about it.
This is the same exact formula just shifted a little, and it's literally not even a story. Just a throwaway troll based on an empty opinion piece covered on Fox News, but it started getting boosted the minute it aired, and people are still weighing in with their nearly identical reactions, reposting the original every time. ( We are far too cynical and apathetic to go along with your dastardly plan, say a bunch of people getting trolled by Fox News.)
Those Strauss Howe generations are literally marketing profiles, modeled on socially conservative middle+ class white people in the US. They were made up from whole cloth by a couple of randos in the 80s who then built a consulting empire to advise businesses and political operatives how to manipulate those demographics better.
The media in general has taken a pretty hamhanded approach by just citing it directly in unrelated stories or even just apropos of nothing, but it's a goldmine.

Re: Republicans suck
Millennial annoys me and was so blatantly fabricated to create a division between older people and “the youth” and it’s occasionally obvious when people snidely call high schoolers or college freshmen ‘millennials’ when moaning about them.
Not a single Millennial ever called themselves that, it was forced upon us and it has no meaning to us in its age group. At first it might seem that 9/11 would make a good delineation, those that knew what life was like pre-9/11 vs post, but Millennial encompasses both those that were 19 on 9/11 and those that were 5. I just can’t tell you how little socially I have in common with someone who wasn’t in kindergarten yet at the turn of the century.
But that’s of course because it’s all marketing BS. The ‘mentally scared from one or two globals wars and their baby boom’ generation had a somewhat reasonable reasons to be labelled in that manner, and everything else was just made up excuses to keep the neat labels and boxes going.
“Ok Boomer” is a direct result of being forcefully called Millennials and Zoomers.

Re: Republicans suck
Maybe we're on different internets, but I have seen a lot of people who repeatedly identified as Millennials and had whole narratives built up around that.
There was a period on Metafilter where it was a huge thing for a subset of people. They were dead serious and heavily invested, too.

Re: Republicans suck
Oh yeah people have taken it as an identity, but it first grew through astroturfing when more to the point terms like “The Me Generation” weren’t accepted. Until like 2006 - 2010 Millennials would have called ourselves Gen Y, if we cared, Y coming after X and all.
But then, as much as I bitch, at least “Millennial” is better than what’s happened to Gen Z or “Zoomers.” if that sticks I’m going to feel sorry their generation got named after a product.
