Default Putting Music On The Web??

Maybe this is a dumb question.... How would I go about converting music from a CD to put on the internet? I have an idea how to do it, making it a .wav file, or something, but I have an inkling that there are more than 1 way to do it. Is there a "best" player and/or format? Do I need special utilities?

This is something that I partially own the rights to, so there's no copyright infringement risk. But the disk is older, so I don't know if there's a technology gap of some kind.

I use Realplayer. They have a part of it for CD's where you record the music off the CD into a file in the RealOne Player programme. You can do this as any file, but mp3 is the preferable option. Just rip it into a folder.

If I'm ever going to put an mp3 somewhere, I usually just use one of my many geocities accounts, though it takes a while to upload on dialup. Most webhosting services allow you to upload mp3 files somewhere.

Realplayer is here. You can download the free version of their stuff there by clicking on the "FREE relaplayer" link at the top.

Yes, MP3 is good. .wav files are not a good plan -- they're completely uncompressed. They'd take ages to upload and download and waste all your space and download quotas. A full CD encoded in .wav would take maybye 600 megs, encoded in mp3 maybye 60.

Older discs are actually better if you want to use them with computers. Modern music CD's are often intentionally crippled and damaged in an attempt to confuse computer CD readers. Other than that, new CDs and old CDs use the same technology.

You can use the RealOne to convert the CD (it is called ripping) tracks to MP3.

You can also use iTunes to do the same thing (you have to set the import options to convert to MP3 otherwise it uses the Apple AAC format, and that isn't as portable as MP3).

You will need to decide on the bit rate of the music (the higher the bit rate, the better the quailty the bigger the file). So 128 is a fine bit rate, but you can go lower to save space.

The version of Windows media player that came with this computer will rip CDs without any trouble. You might check into that if it is installed. (assuming you are running Windows of course.) :chin:

On the left side toolbar, select 'Copy from CD' and it will go from there.

As it turned out, I had RealOne on a computer that's not connected to the internet, so I was able to use that to make an MP3. I was just not finding it available on Windows Media Player. I think I did it, but just too tired(lazy?) to move it right now.

Thanks for the help!

I use Audiograbber to convert CD audio to mp3. It's not free; I think I paid $20 for it.

It would help if you gave the "Moon-Fall-Down" file an extension, i.e. Moon-Fall-Down.mp3

That's weird, I thought I had, but I noticed it wasn't there when I went back to get it. Can you not open it?

Works fine when renamed with an extension. Very pretty.

Thanks Corona688. I still haven't been able to listen to yours.

OK, NS, I added the .mp3 extension, but couldn't edit my original link, so here's a new one
