Re: News Miscellany
Wouldn't be right to put Kurd news in with Palestine anyway.

True, of course. Just noting that the Palestine links have migrated from that thread too.
Perhaps if you build it, they will come. (Start a Middle East and/or Syria thread, and he may post in it.)

I was ambivalent to the TPP before, but now without the USA in it this could be advantageous for Canadian firms that could compete in quality but not volume with US firms. These US firms will be at an access disadvantage now.

Re: News Miscellany
On the minus side, the Doomsday Clock now sits at two minutes to midnight. This ties it with 1953, when the U.S. and U.S.S.R. were both testing hydrogen bombs, for the closest it has ever been. (The Cuban Missile Crisis, undoubtedly still the closest human civilisation has actually come to annihilation, was resolved before it could affect the clock's position.)
On the plus side, I at least have an excuse to post a killer Iron Maiden track.
(Not that much of an upside, to be honest, but you take what you can get these days.)

Re: News Miscellany
That website looks pretty whacky based on a five minute investigation. These articles only link back to the same site or Russia Today from what I saw.

Re: News Miscellany
Sputnik unreliable too then?
China Welcomes Russian Resolution on Chemical Weapons Investigations in Syria - Sputnik International
There are never any facts on these things anyway, there are 'rebel' accusations of things happening in their territory and nobody is going there to do some actual on the ground investigation. And the msm write it all down like good boys. I have no idea if anyone used chemical weapons in Syria and neither does Rex Tillerson or Donald Trump.

Re: News Miscellany
... yes? You ask rhetorically if a well-known Russian propaganda outlet is unreliable? This explains a lot.

Here's the problem right here.
And until a publication builds up some sort of a reputation and has some corroboration it might as well be Scientology or Alex Jones. Sputnik has its own black eyes but I'll take it more seriously than a self-referential news rag. And still give it a side eye.
One place I like to monitor lightly for Middle East news is Twitter, a favourite is:

Who has a finger on the pulse and a reasonable track record of sorting out the crap.

Speaking of reputations, that Reuters article saying the Kurds had asked for gov't assistance? Kurds are denying they did.

Re: News Miscellany
You're right though, any publication has a reputation to build up (and to destroy in some cases, I used to think the BBC and some Dutch papers/broadcasters were reliable, not so much anymore).

Turkish forces are using roads in order to advance through the mountain areas in the Afrin region,” said Vladimir Yevseyev, a military expert and the director of the Public Policy Research Centre at the Valdai Club think-tank.
“This is not very clever. A military unit on the road can easily be stopped by blowing up the first and last vehicles and shooting the vehicles in the convoy.”
