So, Clinton is to the left of Elizabeth Warren, and Bernie Sanders is almost as Left as you can get. Also, let's change "Authoritarian" on the chart to "Populist" because then you might get accused of calling Trump a right-wing authoritarian.

I kind of like the Nolan chart because it gives people a slightly more nuanced view of politics than a strict left-right dichotomy, but it's not an accurate measure by any means. You shouldn't be basing your political analysis on it.

Why did 538 think this chart made any sense?

I don't think BObama is half way between All the Government and None of the Government. The diamond field is the wrong shape to categorize* the left-right-all-none quad-cotomies.

*inasmuch as these things can be delpointenated to a singular place on a chart

It's roughly logarithmic, but with huge errors introduced by wanting to round to multiples of ten, and wanting to round (down especially) to multiples of fifty.

I'd go for the usual total incompetence rather than intentional deception.

Maybe I'm being dense, because I trust your maths better than mine, but how can it be roughly logarithmic when it has evenly spaced bars that go up by:

30, 30, 10, 30, 30, 30, 50, 10, 50, 50, 50

And even if the increases by 10 are because of rounding, you wouldn't make it evenly spaced :lol:

You start by saying "four steps up to 100, then five steps up to 250" - that's the roughly logarithmic part - so at that stage we have:

Then you calculate that the (linear) steps needed to reach 100 are 25, but round that value to 30 which gives us

0	0
-	30
-	60
-	90
100	(120)
-	130
-	160
-	190
-	220? (not 240)
250	250

...and after that you start going up in steps of 50. Presumably this would change at the next "milestone" (650 ?) but the axis runs out before we can see that.

It's difficult to reverse-engineer incompetence, but I think their (lack of) thought process must have gone something like that.
