So many of the them can be explained by the very first one:



So, WTF happened in 1971? Well productivity continued increasing but worker compensation stagnated. That alone explains sooooo much.

That's particularly awful, but some fairly common color palette choices are pretty bad for similar reasons. Especially for color-blind folk. There's some interesting stuff on good color palette choices out there.

I just realized all the people pair up with either birds or rings, each drummer can be sent home with one partridge, etc. Leaving a bunch of Swans and Geese to fight it out.

We were taught at school to sing, 'Four colly birds', and that was how it was written in our hymn books. According to Wikipedia, this came from the earliest published English versions (eighteenth century), although there was likely an earlier version in French. 'Colly', meant 'black as coal', and is probably where the name of the collie dog breed came from.
