Free Speech Systems only wound up with 2 bidders. Jones is not very subtle and literally cannot shut up. He unintentionally revealed:
1. Besides the Onion, the other bidder was a company "owned" by one of his most loyal employees, and funded by some friends of Jones, possibly with money Jones hid from his bankruptcy.
2. Jones probably colluded with other potential investors to keep them from making a bid, so that his own bid was the likely candidate.
It seems that Jones' bid offered more money, but some of the Sandy Hook plaintiffs offered to discharge some of Jones' debt if the Onion wins. The total value of the Onion bid was higher, it just had less cash.
I think it's unlikely that Jones will get his way and the sale will eventually go to The Onion.
