Re: What's up with you?
I saw De La Soul and Iggy Pop and Anthrax and System of a Down and parts of Airborne Toxic Event and Ice Cube and some other bands, one was pretty good I think they're called Prayers.
De La Soul was awesome. Even the part where the otherwise totally responsive audience refused to respond to "ladies say MEEEOW" no matter how many times Trugoy tried. It was all, "I'm sorry Dave. I'm afraid can't do that." Every. Single. Time.
Motorhead cancelled, rumors were that Lemmy has altitude sickness, so Anthrax and Iggy Pop both did longer sets, and the stages were right next to each other, so their sets pretty much merged, and Iggy came in right as Anthrax's last song ended.
And you guys? I hadn't seen Iggy in probably 30 years, and I am here to tell you that he is not only the best performer, but also the best human. Suck it, wannabees. Holy fuck, he is 68 years old. SIXTY EIGHT. It's like he just keeps getting punker. He might have actually improved since the last time I saw him, and he is still running back and forth and jumping up onto equipment to hump it and at one point, he got a chair and I was worried he was going to sit down and sing a ballad or something, but he stood on it and poured water on himself and did the sexy chair dance thing and then threw the water and the chair into the audience. Fucking Iggy Pop.
If you get a chance to see him, move heaven and earth.
Also I bodyblocked this guy who was trying to wedge his way up front, but he was like 6'4" and I was like, "Not only have you not earned this, but I am not going to be standing behind you looking at your fucking back fat," and he was actually getting mad. Tried it a few times and was making angry noises. LOL. Also TLM was blowing up my phone asking where I was, like he was stupid or something.
THEY'RE PUTTING THE DEAD PEOPLE IN THE MEDICAL TENT, TLM. IF I'M NOT THERE, IT KIND OF NARROWS IT DOWN.
Today: Gwar, The Damned, The Vandals, The Pixies, Drive Like Jehu, and either Rancid or Modest Mouse. Probably Rancid.

Re: What's up with you?
Those are some super awesome lists!
If I had to choose your viewing today or your viewing tomorrow I'm not sure which I would choose... both super sweet. Like I would love to see Ice Cube, but I'd also love to see Gwar.
I guess I'd pick today because Iggy, Ice and Anthrax, but then Gwar, The Pixies and The Vandals...
But you don't have to choose
Enjoy tomorrow!

Re: What's up with you?
Honestly, Ice Cube was just sorta OK. It was like a novelty promotional thing more than a show.
Additional notes: I think Cube's son was milling around on the stage taking cell phone pictures of De La Soul. Either that, or they had some other guy who looks exactly like Ice Cube minus a couple decades or so. Also I am not big on Airborne Toxic Event, but they did a really good cover of Kid Cudi's Pursuit of Happiness.
I'm going Sunday, too, so L7, Bootsy Collins, Flogging Molly, GZA, Andrew W.K. and some stuff I'm forgetting. I'm just planning a day at a time, though, so I don't remember what conflicts are in there.

I'm going to see X tonight, and I'm really looking forward to it, but I'm bummed at the same time because Billy Zoom isn't touring with them because he has cancer. Here's his Go Fund Me page if you want to kick in a few dollars

All these boxes had papers, receipts, check copies, bills, etc. in them.
This filing cabinet was nearly full of the same.
It's all been condensed to this...
And this.
I took 52 pounds of paper to the confidential shredders, stuff dating all the way back to 1977. I would like to say I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders, but I really don't feel it. I appear to be a hoarder without any emotional attachment to the stuff I've hoarded.

Re: What's up with you?
Riot Fest Day Two Flash Report:
Well, holy cats, a dark horse candidate won the day! I saw Gwar, The Vandals, The Damned, The Pixies, Rancid, and a few other shows and parts of shows, and the best show was: Drive Like Jehu. Which I was actually only vaguely even aware of before. I looked them up when I saw them on the lineup and thought they sounded pretty good and were associated with other things I like, so I went to go see them, thinking I'd watch for a little bit and then situate myself for The Pixies, but they were amazing so no way I was leaving. The crowd was small but enthusiastic, and me and some guy bonded over how great it was.
And so then, because of how great they were, I was later to the Pixies than I'd planned to be, but I had lone wolf privilege, so I could do this thing where I get behind some big guy who is plowing his way up front, acting like I'm with him, and then halfway through, I got on a limited purpose show date with some other guy and we got up closer, so I had a good vantage despite my irresponsibility. Ha ha!
And Shea, this is the greatest: I'm going to be 51 in a minute. I gave up stuff like this when I had TLM so I could do mom shit, and way too recently realized that I can do it again. And the best thing is that I am not getting groped and skeeved on anymore. I AM PAST MY PRIME, and it's the best thing ever. I had a show date for Iggy and one for The Pixies, but they were both totally fun respectful dates, and I didn't even have to hold their hands! And some guy walked up at Rancid and handed me a cold, sealed $3 bottle of water, threw me a goathead, and left. I am not getting groped, and if someone gets up on me, I am older and fatter and smarter now and waaaay better at telling them to fuck off and doing what I want. A couple of dudebros have run into me unnecessarily and I have muscled them off, and what are they going to do? FIGHT THEIR MOMS? No. They fuck off, which is exactly what I want.
I love being past my prime. It is awesome.
All old ladies should go do whatever they want. I promise it's not that scary once you're in there.
It's almost two, I have to get up early to go tomorrow, and I am not tired yet. LOL.
In conclusion, Drive Like Jehu: On a tinny computer speaker, Okay. Live, on a big professional sound system, holy shit.

Re: What's up with you?
I am headed out to that thing in the desert where they eventually burn a man tomorrow after a few frantic days of packing. It's been a few years since I've been and I'm excited to go back. Lots of people call it home which sounds trite but having partly grown up in the desert it really does feel that way to me. Going out with a newbie has been interesting and occasionally frustrating but soon all the panic will be over, well after the 12 hour drive in a giant RV. Which is a new addition/difference this year, I may still tent camp and partially pretend there isn't a mobile version of normal ol' american home right next to me.
Have you been Pea? It actually might be right up your ally if you haven't. All your favorite DJs including Paris Hilton! (No really Paris Hilton is going to DJ out there, I would go just for ability to say I did but I'll be at a much better party). It's way more than just music, but if you want to piss off a burner, ask them how their rave went.

I saw Iggy & the Stooges a few years ago at a festival. Lisa's right, fucking fantastic.
I saw Aerosmith 12 years ago and had similar thoughts, as well.

Re: What's up with you?
Looooool. So TLM's friend bailed AGAIN, and he was looking for someone else, and I was like, "No. Mabel is going." And then I called Mabel and told her to get ready because she had to get ready for Riot Fest in a couple hours, and because I have reliable friends, she went.
It was in the upper 90s and just baking out when we got in, but then I remembered that when it's time to party, we will always party hard.
So I went up to the front for Andrew WK and it was THE BEST. There was a GIANT "party pit" that I stayed out of because I was in front of it and didn't want to get deposited in the back. And of all the other shows, I saw I think two crowdsurfers, but at WK, there were 7 or 8. It was like an assembly line. Someone would get up top, they'd surf to the front, and security would grab them and escort them out.
Also, a great thing happened. Later at the merch tent, I went to get an Andrew WK t-shirt of the bloody nose picture from I Get Wet, and they were out of most sizes so I had to get some 2XXL I think it was (I only wear shirts with stuff on them around the house, so NBD), and I went to go put it in the locker I was sharing with TLM, and there were already two of them in there. So I gave the giant one to Mabel and now Mabel and TLM and I all have matching Andrew WK shirts.
Also L7 was great, Bootsy was awesome, The Prodigy was good but weird in that they didn't sound like themselves at all, and I don't remember the other bands I saw, but none of them sucked, and some were really good.
The other best show, though, was at Rev. Horton Heat, there was a dad teaching his probably 5 year old daughter to dance, and she was having the best time anyone ever has had, picking things up pretty much instantly, so other people started coming up teaching her other moves.
And the takeaways: We were going over the three days of events, and I saw two passed out people getting medic treatment, TLM saw one, and nobody saw any kind of fight or real aggression beyond brief annoyances. Through three days of all those concerts and all those people in blistering hot weather with all the dust kicking up and everything, people were almost all just really cool and happy and friendly.
The other takeaway is that I have psychosomatic tiredness. Doing laundry and cooking dinner and going to the store or talking on the phone and stuff makes me WAY TIREDER than bouncing around in dustclouds in the baking sun for three days. As such, going forward, I will only ever party.
"Hey, Lisa, could you..." "PARTY?" "Well, no..." "NO." [Parties] <--that is me from now on.

I know you know this already, and you knew this long before you typed this. But now it's officially official. Mabel is awesome and I am so glad to be in at least one club with Ms Mabel: The ZZ Table Club.
I've won all kinds of awards from school and various workplaces but none of them compare to the ZZTC.

Sadly, this is me. After my excitement about feeling my foot and going to the Psychedelic Furs show, standing for that long undid all my progress. I was messed up all weekend. Now I'm dreading the Echo & the Bunnymen concert we also have standing room tickets for. I checked, but all the seats are sold out.

Re: What's up with you?
Yeah, I was not expecting sore feet to be a big problem, but it actually ended up being my main one. The shows were pretty short, ranging from 45 to 90 minutes, I think it was, but if I did two in a row, my feet would get super-sore and I'd have to sit down for a bit to let them recover before I could walk normally. (I actually saw a number of people of varying ages hobbling around like I was, too.)
I did see several people with those canes with built-in stools, though, and thought that was a good idea. They'd let you in with those because they're mobility devices, and I don't THINK you'd need a specific doctor's note or whatever.
Anyways, I figure I am just going to plan on doing whatever I need to so I can do stuff for as long as possible. I had to give up a lot of things when I had that one babby, and live music was a huge one. There were periods when I was going to see live music at least weekly. And I'd found myself sitting around getting all nostalgic about how I used to do stuff when I realized HEYWAITAMINUTE I am no longer needing to bust my ass raising some babby on my own and stuff, so I actually could do things again.
If I end up needing mobility devices for that, oh well. This kind of stuff is still a pretty big deal for me.
Next year, I think I'll probably just go with my Doc Martens* with some really cushy insoles, but if that doesn't work, I'll escalate.
* The show was at the stock show complex, so most surfaces were dusty dirt and rocks, and I think part of the problem was my flexible Birkenstock soles were wrong for that surface.

Having volunteered some years ago to take my 11-year-old godson to a rock concert he dearly wanted to attend, it is my rather proud boast to have seen Rancid live. I know next to nothing of punk, but even I could tell they were a class act.
