Re: What's up with you?
I once had a garage sale despite having no garage. Didn't have a yard either.
Was pretty happy when someone took away my stupid heavy and large desk back down the awkward flight of stairs with the 90 degree turn.

We call them that here, too. It's kind of interchangeable, but I don't want anyone going into the garage because there's too much of my stuff in there.

Visiting daughter and son-in-law in the Florida Keys. Yesterday we took a tiki bar boat out into the Atlantic and stood on a sandbar and did a little snorkeling. First time in the Atlantic; it was WARM. (Having grown up in San Diego, I'm used to the much-chillier Pacific we have here.)

Later, we went into Key West, and visited Judy Blume's book store. Bought a couple of books. Anyone familiar with the Dung-Beetle series?

I SOLD THE RS/6000.
I SOLD THE RS/6000.
Also two IBM/PS2s.
All guaranteed not to work.
HOLY CATS, YOU GUYS. I SOLD THE RS/6000. It's an IBM PowerServer 580F model, and I can't find a picture of one, but it's the size of an end table. I was hard selling it all day, and finally, I SOLD THE RS/6000.
A bunch of other stuff, too, but that was the shocker for the day.

Re: What's up with you?
Yeah. Long obsolete tech! Complementary doilies! And books, books, books, also some books and books, and that's not even a tenth of what we have that we should get rid of. (Boxes of books are HEAVY though, so we could only bring up so many at a time.)
The new pricing is "Infinite number of paperbacks: $1 Five hardbacks or ten or whatever: $1 All you can haul $5" And kids' books have been free since the beginning.
I'm thinking we should set up a free library, because we get some decent foot traffic, and we could keep it stocked for years even if nobody else contributed. When I ran it by our new next door neighbors, they threatened to add to it, though! Mean!
Guys, though. We've cleared out enough space for me to get my workshop back. Maybe even enough to park TWO cars in the two car garage!

Re: What's up with you?
The weirdest part is that the guy was maaaaybe 25. All tatted up and sagging his pants and stuff, so not at all who I would have thought, but he was really nice and paid well over scrap metal value, and he just seemed like a nice guy overall. He says he just likes to tinker. Nobody used to believe me about things like that either, so I believe him.
It's been a long time since I've just talked to random people, so I'm easily charmed, but it's nice to be reminded that people aren't all as mean or as predictable as I sometimes think.

My mom and I had a yard sale once where a lady was looking at the books and she asked if she could have a teacher discount, and we were like yeah, unlimited free books for teachers. She picked through and took a handful but we were like damn, I wish she had taken more.

Re: What's up with you?
We had a whole section of kids' books that were free from the beginning, but they weren't taking enough of them UNTIL TODAY. We got cleaned out pretty good. One little boy discovered at my yard sale that he loves poetry, so we went through and found like ten books of poetry for kids, then his mom picked out some grownup ones she thought he might also like as his reading skills progress. HOW COOL IS THAT?
Anyways, today was almost everything free day, so we cleared out most of what was left, then put the leftovers in a free pile, and tomorrow I'll load whatever's left into the station wagon to take to the thrift store. We may not be able to fit the big tables, but everything else will fit easily.
It was weirdly fun after a year and a half of being extra asocial and wallowing in mean world syndrome to pack it all into three days, but I met a ton of really interesting, cool people, and almost no real obvious jerks. I really do like meeting new people and I missed it more than I realized.
I really did not expect to enjoy that part at all, but it turned out to be the best. I'm still exhausted and am going to go live in a cave for a while, though.
PS: I found a triptych of paintings I started probably 25 years ago buried under boxes of other people's stuff. LOL.

Re: What's up with you?
I bought a very well-reviewed digital piano off of Craigslist on impulse. I took lessons for years as a kid but haven't touched a piano in at least 18 years. I was never particularly gifted but I had some skills. Turns out those skills don't hold up too well. I'm going to see if I can reacquire any of it. Maybe I will not bother with any of the classical repertoire I used to do and will focus exclusively on 80s-90s television theme songs or something.

Re: What's up with you?
One of my maternal uncles died yesterday afternoon. My mother has 10 brothers and sisters and this is the first one to pass away. She's the oldest at 81, her youngest sibling is 62. Uncle Clayton was 78.
And I'm just relieved it wasn't Covid; only plain old garden variety diabetes and pneumonia.
Not sure what that says about me ...

Re: What's up with you?
The Mrs is finally feeling healthy enough to start getting out of the house and venturing to some places. Last month we drove up to the casinos in the mountains where she fed the slots, and I went for a good hike up the creek and back.
and
This weekend, we are off to the Red State of all Red States (Texas) to visit daughter and her hubby.
I find myself a tad trepedatious.
Texas was somewhat civilized last time we were there.

Re: What's up with you?
I seem to have agreed to start maths tuition again. Cool, worked pretty well last time I did it. But that was with 15-16 year olds worried about GCSE exams.
But this time ... the student is Year 5, about 10 years old. I haven't met a 10 year old since ... possibly forever. Do they speak intelligible English at that age? Are they massively energetic? Will I survive?

Re: What's up with you?
10 year olds I've found to be generally delightful. Your largest hurdle might be trying to remember year five maths. The biggest stumpers I've seen reasonably skilled mathematicians stumble over are things where they needed to apply the most basic of math and overthink it. Also see: How many engineers does it take to change a lightbulb? Too late, the janitor got it handled while the engineers were trying to reinvent the step ladder.

Re: What's up with you?
I've got syllabus resources, which include geometry - recognising shapes, addition and subtraction (what is two less than 10?) and NPV. Pages and pages of NPV. What the vak is NPV? Oh, Numbers and Place Value (what is a thousand less than 7231?).

Re: What's up with you?
There is no way that was a ten year old. She was absolutely tiny, a midget. Pretty sure they substituted her 6 year old sister.
Not bad at subtraction for a 6 year old.

Re: What's up with you?
My energy supplier (company that bills me for the electricity and gas used in my house) has gone bankrupt. My gas and electricity won't be cut off, and in due course (a few weeks?), the UK energy regulator is supposed to move me to some other supplier which should get in touch with me and tell me how much I'll then be paying.
We have a stupid system in the UK, introduced by Tory governments in the 90s (Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher and John Major). This was supposed to bring the magic of the free market and competition to energy supply.
It was always a ludicrous concept because everyone gets their gas and electricity from the same suppliers, and along the same pipes and wires - the only choice you have is which company bills you for your energy - in a small road like mine, there are about ten similar houses, all connected to the same pipes and wires, but there could be ten different companies doing the billing, and we might all be paying different amounts per joule of energy delivered.
The companies all have a loyalty penalty - if you stay with them, they ramp up the prices, and they give special lower tariffs to try to lure new customers. So to get the best deal, you have to go through the hassle of switching suppliers every year - and there are lots of companies that offer to do the switching for you (the new supplier pays the switching companies for providing them with new customers).
And the switching companies are then constantly advertising on TV and the internet, so we all get bombarded with annoying adverts featuring cute puppet meerkats, and fat moustachioed opera singers - I'm not joking.
The stupid right wing government pretend to believe that twenty or thirty different companies, each with their own databases, offices, chief executives, and so on, is more efficient at sending out bills than one national gas company, and one national electricity company - which is what we had before.
No doubt all these energy company executives were driving around in their Porsches, living in big country houses, and sending their kids to expensive private schools. But now a sudden gas price rise has caused their companies to go bust. Bad news for their customers, and for the company's low paid telephone staff, but I doubt that the people at the top will suffer much.
All this faux competition for things that are natural monopolies: water, gas, electricity supplies, public transportation networks, and similar - costs ordinary people time, money and hassle, and provides a few rich people with a nice income. If we had a sensible government, they'd outlaw such nonsense. But of course, we don't have a sensible government.

Re: What's up with you?
What cep said.
These energy providers are supposed to compete as if in an open market, but there is a state regulated price cap so they can't actually raise their prices when the wholesale price (which is being hit by weather - not enough wind, China's economic recovery driving gas demand, and some other factors) soars.
Why do we need a price cap? It's not like the ability to heat your home above freezing in the winter is a basic necessity or anything.

Re: What's up with you?
They should be banned from calling themselves energy providers - they're just energy billers.
The actual energy providers are a different set of companies, some in other countries, that generate the electricity and extract the natural gas from the earth.
And both the providers and the billers have to use, and pay for, the distribution network - which even the "competition" fan boys have to admit, is mostly a natural monopoly: effective competition is impossible - it makes no sense to have multiple sets of pipes and wires running in parallel down every street.
As with the rail network, it would make far more sense to nationalise the whole system, with a single entity doing all the billing, and the same fair prices for all customers. But that would mean the politicians would have to admit they fucked up badly by forcing the "competition" into the system in the first place - so it's not going to happen while the current group of morons are running the country.
