Smilin is now useless as a smokescreen for the king. Getting rid of him won't cost the guards anything at this point.

The assassin will not waste his single kill on someone who's clearly not the king. Hence, we're not actually narrowing his choice at all by killing Smilin.

Need to learn to finish my thinking before submitting...
If nothing else, he's a pro-town vote. I'm also a bit leery of just tossing a lynching opportunity into the trash. Look at it this way...do we want to lynch someone we assume is town and have an essentially 0% chance of hitting the assassin, or do we want to lynch any other random person whose role we do not know and have a 1 in 6 shot at the assassin? (1 in 6 because guards know their own identity, the king's identity, and, for the sake of argument, Smilin's identity.)

Since there's no night phase, we don't have to make our lynches count as much as usual. We don't have to accept a loss of a townie every time there's a lynch.
