Re: Which is the best LOTR film?
Ok, a few people have recommended the extended editions now, can you summarise what is added?
How much time is added to each movie?
How much does it 'fill in the gaps' of the story line?
How much would someone who hasn't read the books get out of them (keeping in mind this person loved the movies in general )?
What characters are significantly expanded/enhanced by the extended versions?
Anything else you can think of would be appreciated too

Re: Which is the best LOTR film?
The first two are extended roughly half an hour, give or take, and ROTK has bout 40 minutes extra iirc.
I'd say quite a few gaps are filled, and that there are also parts of the story that only happen in the extended editions and do not happen in the theatrical release editions at all.
They are far superior to the theatrical editions IMO. Even if you haven't read the books, but you loved the movies anyway, I'd say you'd love the EE's even more. They just give you a lot more of the little gems that make the books so great. For example Merry and Pippin after the destruction of Isengard getting high - great scene. It's not as much about the characters developing more, as the relationships between characters developing. You get a much better sense, I think, of the motivations behind what they are doing.
Sorry this reply isn't the greatest, it's late and I'm tired, otherwise you'd be getting a much greater and more enthusiastic speel from me on this.
BTW, I always have a soft spot for people named Adam.

Thanks very much, that was helpful And if you have anything to add later, or if anyone else wants to say something, that would be great too!
I have the three movies on DVD, but the regular versions, not the extended versions. I was wondering if it was worth getting the extended versions or not and it sounds like it would be worth it. Perhaps I'll look around for a used copy or maybe wait until Christmas
Thanks again,
Adam

I am not sure that M and P were getting HIGH after the destruction of Isengard *looks shocked*. I saw it more as sharing a pipe between friends .

Is Denethor the guy who tries to burn himself and his still alive son? And is a palantir one of those glass ball things? If so, yes, that makes much more sense!
|
The Palantiri were a set of crystal spheres (mustn't call them crystal balls! ) that allowed the user to see over great distances. They could also allow their owners to converse with each other. They were heirlooms of the Numenoreans, given to them by the elves, iirc. Saruman had one due to his residence at Isengard. Denethor had another. Sauron gained one after Minas Ithil fell. (renamed Minas Morgul, it was the orc city that Frodo and Sam saw the orcish host issue from.) Due to the force of Sauron's will, his possesion of a palantir made them unsafe for lesser creatures to use. He was able to control what could be seen through them. In this way, he furthered Saruman's fall and drove Denethor to madness. In the novels, Denethor's desire to kill himself was caused by his vision (using the palantir) of the Black Fleet approaching Gondor. (Neither he nor Sauron realized that it carried Aragorn and the rangers instead of the Corsairs.)

Crystal spheres, of course, must have been a typo
Thanks for the summary, I appreciate the info
Maybe now that I've seen the movies I'll be able to make it throught the books, I should give it another go!

Yes. I was given the DVD boxed set as a gift but somehow the words "extended edition" didn't stick before the shopping trip.

Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd were entertaining but didn't really do much - until ROTK.

Re: Which is the best LOTR film?
I have to point out that I found dominic thingy and billy thingy's characters completely interchangeable. But then, I pretty much did in the books as well.

Really?? In the movies I thought they were pretty interchangeable, but in the books I found them very different. Ah now you've got me in the mood for reading them again.

YouTube delivers auto-generated Russian subtitles and auto-translation into English, or any language of your choice. This only improves an already sublime interpretation.

Part 2 starts with the Barrow-Wights - and Tom Bombadil rescuing them.
Either there are more than 2 parts, or they're not going to get very far!

Re: Which is the best LOTR film?
I think Legolas is played by a woman. And has hardly any lines. Gimli also has no lines that I've noticed even though they are currently in Moria, and seems to be being played for comic effect.
So, pretty much the same as the Peter Jackson version.

Yes, it only covers the Fellowship of the Ring.
Someone has provided a handy scene list with timings in the comments, in case you want to check out a specific part and not watch the whole glorious thing.

Oh. My. GOD.
How have I not heard about this.
The only explanation is that those actors silenced everyone who ever heard of it, those are some pretty big stars, y'all.
