Re: Burning Man disaster
Based on the complete lack of discussion online, most people don't know what Burning Man is. And most people simply don't care.

Re: Burning Man disaster
Try it next year. I'll bring a fire stick.
It was cool when there were fewer.
But this will weed out the Wannabes.
Go home. It's all over now, Baby Blue.

Excellent reference, and the tune that should have been used to close out Breaking Bad.

I am curious why you think it a disaster.

Clearly you have never been trapped by mud

Well, no. not trapped. Bogged down up to our belly buttons, once.
But not trapped.
Meanwhile at Black Rock;

Quote:
Thousands of people remain trapped at the Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert after heavy rains inundated the area and created thick, ankle-deep mud

The only "disaster" is probably that all the port-a-potties are full.
"Oh, the Humanity!"
Besides, Weather forecast says that it's going to dry out this week.
Only thing trapped will be the shit you don't get out of the mud before it dries.

Is it a Dickens reference or a STYX song?

Nope. Baby Blue is a George Strait song. You’re thinking of Crystal Blue Persuasion.

Not at all! The one they actually used to close it down was Badfinger's Baby Blue:
Which is a damn fine tune, but they should have used Dylan's It's all over now, Baby Blue, the tune Lars reference:

Totally random. And ten times more interesting than alkaline mud.

Re: Burning Man disaster
Muddy roads that left tens of thousands of partygoers stranded for days at a counterculture festival had dried up enough by Monday afternoon to allow them to begin their exodus
Well, sounds like not too big a disaster.
“We are a little bit dirty and muddy, but spirits are high. The party still going,” said Scott London, a Southern California photographer, adding that the travel limitations offered “a view of Burning Man that a lot of us don’t get to see.”
[Sigh]the good ol' days.
In the late sixties, I worked more than a few such festivals. A number of them got rained upon. The worst was in Palm Beach County, I think. I left a damned good pair of Fryes in a mudpit, there.

It was the first conservatives, not the first liberals. They were certain that fire was Satanic.

For the hundreds or so that are curious thanks to Resto-crew BurningMan passed inspection from BLM, and the feds are happy the event left no trace.

Re: Burning Man disaster
The thing that's amusing about Burningman as some Libertarian wet dream, like "Omg I get gifted a rum and coke while climbing a metal dragon that's spitting fire! Fuck you government regulation!" is the number of regulations that need to be met.
There's tons of engineering and checklists in the background making sure that the drunk ass idiot with a cigarette climbing the ships mast above the propane tanks doesn't blow everyone up. So much out there is climbable because they had to submit engineering drafts with their art proposal to be allowed to build it.
Safety Third!
Is a fire arts motto that means the safety of your patrons comes first and the safety of the establishment second. Unfortunately it can too easily be seen by outsiders as "safety doesn't matter."

Re: Burning Man disaster
There's a good change that twice as many people will show up this year, due to all the publicity.
The weather patterns that kicked up all the rain last year are not really looking like a repeat, and there will be people broiling in the Sun because they didn't bring enough tents, or enough fluids.
Last year was a Piece of Cake.

No, they won't. There is, and has been for some time, a limit on the number of people and vehicles allowed in.
The irony is delicious. The freedom and joy of the event, depends on not just regulations, but restricting how many people can attend. You know in your heart it is true.
If 300,000 new people show up, and are allowed in, the entire thing becomes a total shit show

Re: Burning Man disaster
Nah, the event is capped at 87,000 (73,000 attended last year) and given the location, there's no such thing as crashing the gate. Gate even has a quick rummage through your vehicle to make sure you're not trafficking in ticketless humans. Everyone must have a ticket, including delivery drivers and heavy equipment operators.
(Being able to prove they stayed under the cap is part of the stipulation for repeat events. Similarly many in restoration may be save the environment hippies, but proving they left federal land how they found it is also part of the deal with the feds to allow them to do it again.)
