How WallStreetBets Pushed GameStop Shares to the Moon

The GameStop Game Never Stops

Some highlights:

There is a US company called Gameshop that trades as GME.
They are a brick and mortar company with about 5000 stores that trade in physical copies of video games.
Their stock was tanking in 2019 because not as many people buy physical copies of games these days. Price about $7
Large hedge funds started shorting the stock. A LOT. Like more than the total number of shares at points.
Some reddit user on r/Wallstreetbets says "hey this is undervalued" and mostly gets laughed at... until...
Somehow in 2020 people on reddit start banding together to buy stock and call options and drive the price up. Price about $15
This creates a feedback loop described in the articles above.
Memes of "rocket to the moon" and "never sell, diamond hands" abound on reddit. Redditors are out for Wall Street blood.
End of 2020 price is about $20. The shorts are feeling it.
Then about a week ago shit goes insane. Price skyrockets to over $60.
One large hedge fund is down about $2.5 BILLION and has to be bailed out by Citadel.
Price keeps going up up up. It was at about $150 at close today.

Then just a couple hours ago Elon Musk tweeted only this:

and GME went up from about $150 to $220 in a very short time. This is insane, like unprecedented insane.

For those that don’t video game, GameStop *was* huge, but their entire market was built around physical copies. Probably 95% of my PS2 games were bought used from GameStop. They also specialized in early release deals, so people who needed to play the latest and greatest would buy a game pre-release from Gamestop and then resell it back to gamestop next time they were in for the newest pre-release. Their used prices were quite good too. I bought more than a few bad games I knew were bad but seemed amusing to try for four dollars.

Their demise was also quite on purpose. Video game makers were quite annoyed at all the secondary sales profits they weren’t seeing and sped up the push for digital only releases.

GameStop’s response was to push their staff to be more aggressive with customers for less money, earning them a bad reputation. Then the pandemic hit and any attempt to ride the current retro game resurgence vanished.

I have been totally fucking riveted watching GME today. I don't care about GameStop or GME longs, but goddamn, the execution of that short squeeze is a thing of beauty. If the after hours activity keeps up, that particular hedge fund will go bust at the opening bell tomorrow Next up they are doing AMC and Blackberry.

The insanity continues as the GME price continued to rise overnight and opened over $300 today. Not only that but the people wanting to get into the action one side or the other increased so much that within 30 mins of markets opening a lot of major brokerages are unable to handle the traffic.

There are a couple other ones to watch right now, the leader being AMC theatres which was trading at $4 yesterday and opened over $20 this morning. It seems like this one may not explode until the majority of r/WallStreetBets users are done with GME.
