JWST deployment going well - sunshield stretched taut and working, secondary mirror in place. Next stages are the primary mirror segments unfolding and positioning.

lol, two different temperature measurement systems in the same tweet. (Presuming Kelvin in the absolute zero case.)

And Fahrenheit, to boot. It's (a) science and (b) Europe so I don't think so.

Fahrenheit was born in Poland, and spent most of his life in The Netherlands, so he was just as European as Celsius, who was Swedish.

Anders Celsius chose a better scale, one hundred degrees between the freezing and boiling points of water, but he had them backwards: water would freeze at 100, and boil at zero. His scale was reversed to the currently used form only after his death.

Lord Kelvin (real name William Thomson) worked out that absolute zero temperature should be about -273 on the Celsius scale. He did this by measuring the expansion of a gas at constant pressure when heated, and then extrapolating his graph back to the point where the gas would contract to zero volume. Not that any gas actually does this: gases turn liquid or solid before they get that cold, and in Kelvin's day, they didn't have the means of obtaining temperatures near -273 anyway. It's remarkable that he calculated a number for absolute zero so close to the modern accepted value.

Speaking of low temperatures, the JWST has reached L2. Not quite ready for full operation though, as the cold side - currently -202°C, about 70K - needs to be lower than 50K. And the 18 segments of the mirror still need to be aligned.

From your own link, you disingenuous, racist piece of shit.

Quote:
She told MTN News that the latest research shows shrinking, but in ways much more complex than what was predicted. Because of this, the park must update all signs around the park stating all glaciers will be melted by 2020.
But let’s delve into this with a better source.

Quote:
When the park was founded in 1910, it had over 100 glaciers, mammoth masses of ice that covered about 25 acres and moved under their own weight. Now, "a couple dozen" are large enough to be considered glaciers, and all of them have suffered tremendous melt, according to the park.
And

Quote:
Between 1966 and 2015, all of the 26 named glaciers in the park got smaller. Some lost as much as 80% of their area, but the average loss was 40%, Glacier National Park tweeted this week.
