World’s oldest family tree revealed in 5,700-year-old Cotswolds tomb | Archaeology | The Guardian
Quote:
The researchers have discovered that 27 were biological relatives from five continuous generations of a single extended family. The majority were descended from four women who all had children with the same man.
“It tells us that descent was important,” said Fowler. “When they were building these tombs and deciding who to include in them, certainly in this case, they were selecting people who were close relatives of the people who were first buried there. They have this close connection to their immediate ancestors and that extends over several generations.
“Family was important and you can see that with the inclusion of some very young children in the tomb as well.”

Lavish Roman mosaic is biggest found in London for 50 years | Roman Britain | The Guardian
Quote:
The largest expanse of Roman mosaic found in London for more than half a century has been unearthed at a site believed to have been a venue for high-ranking officials to lounge in while being served food and drink.
Dating from the late second century to the early third century, the mosaic’s flowers and geometric patterns were a thrilling, once-in-a-lifetime find, said Antonietta Lerz, of the Museum of London Archaeology (Mola).
|
Quote:
Its main panel features large, colourful flowers surrounded by bands incorporating a twisted-rope design, set within a red tessellated floor. There are also geometric elements and lotus flowers in the main mosaic and a smaller nearby panel.
David Neal, an expert in Roman mosaic, has attributed the design of the larger panel to a team of mosaicists known as the Acanthus group, who developed a unique style. The smaller panel is a close parallel to one unearthed in Trier, Germany, suggesting that London artisans travelled abroad.

Re: History geekodrome
Funny, but my family used to watch Fiddler on the Roof regularly when I was a wee lad, so I was just talking about it with my siblings a couple nights ago. Hence despite not having seen it in >40 yrs. it was the first thing I thought of when I saw that word.

Stress on the first syllable? Aspirated vowels distinct from non-aspirated? Agglutinative? Not Indo-European?

Re: History geekodrome
I think the claim is pretty well supported. But I'm suspicious of the use of the word "tribe". To me (a) that indicates a much smaller population grouping, and (b) carries a lot of racist connotations of "tribal" as a synonym for "backward" (and "we need to convert them and govern them"). That may of course indicate nothing more than that the article is a popular one not a scholarly one.
The other factor that makes me want to see more evidence of this is that there has been quite a strong attitude among colonials in South Africa to hold up the Khoisan as the "true" aboriginals of southern Africa (convenient, because they were already few in number and not really competing to hold good farmland) - as opposed to "the Bantu" who, the Afrikaner theory would have it, were migrating from the north into the regions that are now South Africa at the same time as the Dutch and the British were moving in from the Cape and Durban - and thus they, the blacks, have no right to the land. Which is just a really convenient theory. The various groups of Khoisan are thus the "noble savage". And none of this helps determining the truth.

Re: History geekodrome
"The definition of tribal is relating to a group or community with similar ancestors, customs and traditions. An example of tribal used as an adjective is the phrase "tribal traditions," which means the traditions of a group of people who have a common ancestor."

If I can't get banned for elucidating authoritarianism, I'm fine.
