It's definitely related at least in that we see different behaviour in the quick reply box vs the new reply page. But this new issue occurs in the full reply page and not in the quick reply box - with the Wordle unicode characters it's the other way round.

Just for the record, I have looked at some of the code for the relevant php page. Not sure if that kid claiming mad code skills has had a look yet.

I reckon it is not a complete surprise that it's a wild wall of spaghetti. I can't see anywhere where a 403 would be returned; what's likely is that something on the web server (hosting package) has changed* and is returning a 403 when the code fetches a resource (but I can't see where).

* Because I'm 99.9% sure nothing has changed in FF's vBulletin code in the past 10 years.

Could be a newer version of PHP. Lots of hosting providers have been pushing users to use v8.1 or newer. The interface for linking PHP to MySQL or MariaDB or whatever database software they use has also likely changed. The long-used methods of linking to databases are now deprecated.

Maybe the code has always had the bug, but a PHP configuration change has made the difference between the attempted access being silently ignored versus throwing an error?
