Art Porn
We already have threads dedicated to fapping over real estate and jewelry, so it's high time we had one for the visual arts.
I'll kick things off with my favorite Lichtenstein of all time which is going on the block next week for the first time since 1988. I appear to have misplaced the $40 million I was going to use to buy it, but I haven't checked under the couch cushions yet so keep your fingers crossed.
"I Can See the Whole Room!...and There's Nobody in it!", Roy Lichtenstein, 1961:
How brilliant is that? Out of all of Roy's comic-inspired pieces, this one to me is hands down the perfect one to have on a wall. It's also very early and thus has unpolished elements that I adore, like visible pencil lines under the print. You can see them if you zoom in on the Christie's image.

I love that style. I saw a large farm scene on Antiques Roadshow once that was just glorious.

Re: Art Porn
It's just adorable and happy, like getting a hand made Christmas card from a child. Oh look how pretty! Comfort art.

Well, I wouldn't want to patronize the entire genre. None of the kids I know have ever made me a card as awesome as, say, one of Warren Kimble's cows.

Re: Art Porn
This is from 1839. I like the ethereal quality. For some reason that Taj Mahal like thingy just seems out of place art chronology wise, somehow.

Re: Art Porn
What makes art good or bad? Is it all subjective?

Re: Art Porn
If a hypothetical critic's hypothetical kid could have done that, then it is objectively bad art, to the extent that it is art at all. Duh.

Re: Art Porn
I fell in love with this Degas when I saw it up close in person touring the Wynn art collection. It sucks on the monitor, but the lighting in the painting (from footlights) is so remarkable

Re: Art Porn
SR, we've had thrads about that question in the past, mostly hinging on that most favored of ill-defined scapegoats, "modern art." If you've got the masochism for it, they're actually fairly interesting reads: Modern Art is a Hoax, Right?, Modern art ... again. I'd rather this thrad stick with the fapworthy stuff we like, though, instead of getting into the whole demarcation debate.

Re: Art Porn
That's beautiful, Shea. Did you know a Degas ballerina statue recently failed to sell at auction? It had like a $30 million estimate and received not even a single bid. Eleven years ago it sold for $11.5 million.
