Random aside: some 20 years ago posting some web pages with Notepad, learning basic HTML as I went, first thing that occurred to me is how it resembled WordPerfect tags.

Have you ever used the phrase "reveal codes" in anger?

Before HTML ... and possibly before even wordperfect ... I worked at IBM and they had a thing called SGML. It used : and . instead of < and > but it was still the same basic thing.

In college, I used to write my papers as text files with WordPerfect formatting and pretty much only opened WordPerfect when I was ready to print them. It was actually easier and less error-prone than WYSIWYG.

Most markup languages are similar that way.
