I’m very sorry to hear that. He’s had a good life, and should have as good and comfortable death as possible. He’s a good boy and deserves that.

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
Mookie loves the uppies
We’ve been wondering what her ears are going to do, they’ve been floppy tipped for awhile now. I’m beginning to be hopeful that they will stay that way.
She is over 9 months old now.
Her personality is still mostly but she is learning how to receive pets

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
We got a full workup for Alphabits from the oncologist yesterday. I spent a lot of money, but at least I know what I'm dealing with, and it's not good. This is going to kill him, it's just a matter of what kind of palliative care, and how long. The tumor is starting to push his right eye out and is probably going to start pushing on his brain soon unless we do something. I have a call into a radiologist, but a radiation treatment will basically just stop or shrink the tumor and give him more time and maybe more comfort. The oncologist thinks that the radiologist might be able to take him in 2 weeks or so, but that may actually be too long to wait.
Alphabits has been pretty lethargic since the appointment. I think the stress took a lot of of him. He's not in active pain, but I think the tumor is getting generally uncomfortable.

I'm sorry to hear that, specious. I don't have anything to offer, other than the resident vet's general advice not to rush it, but also don't doubt yourself when you feel like it's time. It is more stressful and difficult for all when it happens on an emergency basis.

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
I get to join the line of owners of sick pets. My wonderful kitty Meeper, one of the two surviving basement kittehs, is ailing. She can't stand up. She was fine on Thursday night and on Friday morning she couldn't stand, couldn't sit up. The vet doesn't know why. No signs of a stroke, trauma, nothing. I'm falling apart. We already lost two cats this year. Losing her would break my heart.
Plus cash is tight. Really tight. We may have to make some draconian decisions and I can't even think about that now.

She seems to be doing better. The vet says she has something pressing against the nerves in her neck. With some rest and care she should (fingers crossed) get better. Here's hoping! :fingerscrossed:

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
I'm hoping for the best, vremya.
Alphabits is generally in some discomfort, but he's been pretty normal except for when the pain medication wears down. The only bad part is that his nose has been bleeding, despite the treatment, our house looks like a knee high crime scene. We had people over (outside) yesterday, but chose not to let him mingle because we didn't want Mrs. Reason's coworkers to get blood on them. He did get to visit with a few people who were OK with it.
Plus, he's gone from Klingon to more like a Hadrosaurus.

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
Worrying news from Casa JoeP. Dusty, 14 year old tiny black cat, has got even tinier despite appearing to eat her food with the usual level of interest. And she's been licking the inside of mouth in an uncomfortable way, suggesting something like a tooth abscess.
It's not that. The vet found ("oh. That's not good") a mass under her tongue, which is probably a tumour. Next step is to do a biopsy and more detailed examination under anaesthesia. But it's likely to be difficult to operate on and treat.

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
I contacted an at-home euthanasia service and they had appointments today or later in the week. Everyone in the family was home today and the tumor was already occluding his vision - it had grown noticeably in just the past week. We opted for sooner rather than later. Alphabits is gone, and now I'm trying (and mostly failing) to get some work done.
This feels a bit rough because he was still relatively healthy and happy, he was eating normally and did not have any personality changes, but he was a bit more lethargic, clearly in pain when the pain medication wore off, and his nose was almost constantly bleeding because the tumor was also in his nasal cavity. There's no exact "right" time, but we really shouldn't have extended it much longer, regardless.
The at-home service is a good idea - he was a lot more comfortable being in his own house, and he warmed up to the vet pretty quickly. I also took him out to the backyard for about an hour before they came so he could poke around and get attention (and relieve himself - I didn't really want it to be messy).
I didn't ask for mementos like ashes or pawprints. I have hundreds of pictures.

Dusty is currently no worse. I feel horribly guilty because I have gone to Finland (booked before this tumour started causing symptoms) but fortunately Little Miss JoeP was able to come and stay - she can work remotely from my home just as well as from hers, and her bf can look after their 2 cats. Hoping she won't have to do anything more dosing up the painkillers until the next vet appt.

I feel guilty whenever we leave our dogs. They don’t know and we can’t tell them that we will be back.
This weekend we are going to a Dodgers game with ES’s sister’s family.
We are taking gizmo and leaving Mookie in the care of a good friend abd I still will worry about her.

Re: An Arf-Arf Here and a Meow-Meow There... E I E I O!
You should! Then we can feel guilty together. When we went on vacation last month we had a house/dogsitter but PupF still licked up a hotspot and had to spend the next 3 weeks in the cone of shame.
So I guess now we are not going anywhere without them for the rest of their lives.
