British Columbia, pop 5.1 million: 1327

nb BC is bigger than Texas. Also half the population is in one river valley.

South Korea still hands down winner.

Side note: Oregon 4.5 million: about 2200

The only sociopaths I really think had an effect on transmission were those we've elected to office.

I don't think most transmission in the UK is driven by people who ignore the rules about e.g. hospitality. Most of it is from people who aren't in a position of privilege to work from home, or take time off work without significant government support (which was not forthcoming).

Maybe the US is different, but given comparable (order of magnitude) deaths per capita across most of the 'West' I'm not sure.

We've done well, but we're also very lucky in being remote. We had time to learn the lessons, and travel restrictions are easy.

Of course I'm not talking about people who have to go to work. I'm talking about people who are flying around going on vacations to Hawaii and Cancun, and intentionally flouting the rules because they're bored and/or stupid. And many of them are elected officials.

And yes, of course I know it would have been much easier and more effective if those with the power to do so had approved some type of support to get people through shutdowns and slow transmissions.

But they didn't, so that leaves it on the rest of us to do the right thing as best as we're able. And there are way too many people who aren't even trying. Some even seem to be trying to make it worse.

Some of the highest transmission rates in our state early on were in tourist areas like Vail and Aspen. The people who work hospitality in those places have been repeatedly exposed to all kinds of rich assholes don't think the rules apply to them. There were people breaking lockdown rules as soon as there were lockdown rules, coming from all over to infect the locals who were already struggling. They can't afford not to go to work. They also, overwhelmingly, can't afford health care or rent anywhere near where they work. So they're either commuting into surrounding areas or living with a whole bunch of other people.

Of course they're vectors, because they don't have a choice. But they weren't the ones who brought the virus here in the first place because they thought they'd somehow earned a vacation. That was the sociopaths. And stimulus payments or whatever don't really factor into the choices of people who charter flights to Aspen because they're bored and entitled. It wouldn't even occur to them to think about how their actions affect anyone else.

Maybe the UK is different, but we definitely have that Qanon segment who skew hardcore Republican and literally fascist. They might not be technically sociopaths, but they certain seem to lack empathy and take joy in the suffering of “libtard” victims.

There is a real political divide over masks.

Quote:

To this end, I discuss how a growing collection of empirical research indicates that an individual’s propensity to experience empathy correlates with one’s general political attitudes (including party affiliation) as well as with which specific policy positions one takes. More specifically, this research suggests that a strong connection exists between empathy and liberal political views.

Empathy and the Liberal-Conservative Political Divide in the U.S.| Journal of Social and Political Psychology

Again, I don’t think Lisarea was talking about literal sociopaths and even if she was, I think lack of empathy is a reasonable proxy.

We have a large group of covid deniers who think that anything that slows covid tramples their liberty.

It’s hard to see how they wouldn’t be spreading more plague.

There are however a ton of people who "have to" go to work because their idiot management are too insecure or luddite or reallyIdon'tknowwhatstopsthem to allow them to work from home. Especially in London.

Our trends have been relatively good and returned to high-but-pre-Thanksgiving levels, which is obviously exactly the time to relax the measures that are working, so more in-person dining and bar service is now permitted. Last night I went inside a restuarant to pick up our take-out order. I was wearing two masks and was in there for less than 60 seconds but holy fuck it was bad. Bar jammed with unmasked people, way more table capacity than there should have been. Got our food and got the fuck out of there.

Hey at least there aren't more transmissible variants out there to worry about right

As I wrote last month, this is exactly what public health experts have warned against doing, given the possibility of a surge in cases driven by new coronavirus variants. While there is reason to be hopeful—vaccines are here—now isn’t the time to let our guard down, they said. In fact, they told me, easing restrictions now could give the virus even more opportunity to accumulate dangerous mutations.
Yeah, we may or may not have new strains, but we do have a plague that is racking up concerning mutations.

Twice now I've had these "Get Connected" meets with fellow employees in Germany. And both times, COVID lockdowns have been a big part of the conversation.

I'm looking forward to a time when that changes.

Colorado's vaccine rollout is ridiculous.

For one thing, you have to have TWO qualifying conditions to get ahead in the line. So if you JUST have cancer or heart disease, you better go get something else real quick. And no, you can't just get obese or start smoking because those aren't on the list. Neither is asthma.

And then, of course, you have to go find all the lists and get on them, and holy fuck, these providers are some evil fucking pigs, making you sign up for whole entire accounts so they can spam you just for trying to get a vaccine. Kaiser was the worst. I set up an account for Matlock and it made me do that whole out of wallet ID process, run by sketchy, unaccountable data miners. And THEN, it forces you to make "security questions" to make your account easier to crack into. I set it up with nonsense answers, obviously, but they required three of them, so he now has a list of gobbledegook answers he needs to keep along with his password. For a provider he does not even use.

And that's just one of the six or however many companies that are getting the vaccines.

Thank god for all of this healthcare choice we have.

I am pleasantly surprised at how relatively well NC is doing. The state information system that underlies the county public health distribution system is not good at all, and is so difficult to access and use that it exacerbates access inequalities. Basically, county waiting lists push you to a state system which enables you to make county appointments in county systems. Lots of failure points. BUT they are doing a good job of getting doses out to counties, pharmacies and health systems. They have been able to accelerate to essential frontline workers ahead of schedule. The main thing that worries me right now is that in a lot of rural areas, we are starting to see supply outpace demand and a lot of people haven't even started. That suggests to me that there are a lot of people who just aren't going to get it.

Based on how my various relatives have gotten theirs, keep an eye on the federal retail pharmacies and local pharmacies (esp. with J&J). I am somewhat convinced that health system and county "waiting lists" are illusions of control. None of my vaccinee relatives have actually gotten an appointment from a waiting list - only an e-mail allowing them to register in the state system and then try to find an appointment. The simplest turned out to be a local pharmacy that got allocated some Moderna doses and did a drive-through day.
