Do you think you'll use that option, once it's available? It conflicts with the hide/show yellows button, which is another reason I was thinking of getting rid of the button. I could still retain the button though (maybe make displaying the button an option) for those players who don't like the pencil marks.
I also need to consider the 'results' thing once the pencil mark option is rolled out. It does make the game easier, so its use should be indicated in the results somehow - or perhaps there should be a time penalty for those who choose to use it?

Is this available in the current version? I crave pencil marks.

I've put the version with pencil marks, which I was working on all those months ago,
online now. It's very alpha, and most of the options do nothing right now. However, it does have working automatic pencil marks (which can't currently be switched off) and it allows each user to select their 'theme', from the ones created using the
Sudoffle theme designer
Currently, it just plays exactly the same 'daily' game as the regular version.
The idea was that you'd also be able to select a game from the archive, or generate a random one to play at any time. There would be an optional timer, penalties for using the pencil marks, a record of your statistics for the most recent and previous games - perhaps with a comparison ranking against other players.
If anyone's interested, they can make suggestions for additions and improvements, and maybe we can build it into a more rounded and playable game.
