Thanks for sharing all of this, Ang. I listened to country music in my youth and Merle is a big part of that. There's a lot I didn't know about him or his music from then (and before).

I was not previously familiar with Merle Haggard's "Inspirational" albums. Apparently he recorded at least four such albums. Since it is Sunday I thought that I would go ahead and post some of my favorite songs that he recorded from that genre.

So, this is going out to all you heathens for your spiritual benefit.

The first selection is Hank Williams' classic "I Saw the Light". My uncle sang this at my ordination and hope it will be sung or played at my funeral.

&list=PLi4Hq83aSLQizB7PR6xJq4duAXjOo-YA7&index=20
The second selection is "I'll Fly Away", an upbeat gospel tune about dying. I have also requested this song for my funeral. This is a duet with Albert E. Brumley, Jr. who wrote the song. I couldn't find a decent version of Merle singing this solo.

"Love Lifted Me" is one of my favorite hymns. I haven't actually requested this for my funeral, but it wouldn't hurt my feelings none if it got sung. I don't think this is one of Merle's best efforts, but it'll do, I guess.

This last song is not performed by Merle Haggard (it doesn't appear that ever recorded this), but since I seem to be posting my funeral requests, I had better add this one as well. I definitely want it sung or played at my funeral. If anyone should ask why I think this would be appropriate for my funeral I will be glad to provide an explanation. Otherwise, you can just shake your heads and wonder what I am thinking of to include it.

Damn! I seriously did not see this one coming. I would have expected the spanish inquisition before I would have expected to hear this.

Howard Marks "Mr Nice" | The Guardian

From the linkIn his later life, he became a campaigner for the legalisation of cannabis. In an interview with the Observer in January last year, in which he revealed that he had been diagnosed with cancer, he said: “Of course, the legalising of marijuana for medical purposes is to be welcomed. But, personally, I never wanted to have to wait until I had cancer before I could legally smoke. ... I want it to be legalised for consuming recreationally – and I’m pleased to see they have now done this in four US states. After my experiences at the hands of the US legal system, America is the last place in the world that I thought would be leading the charge.”

Just saw that Tony Conrad died on Saturday. Conrad was an artist of some renown, a professor in the media studies program at SUNY Buffalo for 40 years, and back in the 60s was a bandmate of John Cale and Lou Reed.

Gareth Thompson, Blake of Blake's 7, reported dead - but it still may be a hoax.

Not to argue the point (which would be silly since we can assume the issue will be settled in a few hours or even minutes), but just because the criteria we use to judge the reliability of internet information are a worthy topic in themseves ...

There really is only one source for this news so far; blakes7online.com . The rest are citing that as their source. Granted that The Telegraph has a reputation for trustworthiness that I can assume they wish to protect, so if they are willing to grant this kind of authority to the Blake's 7 website, that adds weight. But HuffPo have a similar reputation to protect and apparently they don't always get it right.

Now, call me old-fashioned, but I would expect death announcements of celebrities to be credited to hospital staff who were in attendance, close family members of the deceased, or agents/managers. Fansites for past productions fit none of these categories. So I find reason to doubt even the Telegraph's call here.

The BBC is going with the story and cites the Press Association's report of a friend's (presumed independent) confirmation.

For everyone still WAY bummed out over the recent demise of Keith Emerson, check out this swinging take on Trilogy by Jad&Den Quintet. :pianist:
The rest of you can watch it even if you're not still WAY bummed out. You just have to slowly chant "Emerson, Lake and Palmer" three times while looking towards the East.

Former Wrestling Star Chyna, dead at 45.

I've never been a huge wrestling fan, but I once had a roomate who was (and wrestled in amateur pro-wrestling gigs) and taught me a ton about the insides of the entertainment sport. I had always viewed Chyna as validating the women's side of the sport, and ultimately paved the way for the recent change by WWE to change their name from "Divas" to just "Women."

Apparently she had been battling her own demons for awhile now.

Negativland founder Richard Lyons has also died, age 57. The same band's Ian Allen and Don Joyce died last year, ages 56 and 71 respectively.

Wolf Blitzer’s favourite Prince song was “Purple Haze”. Wonkette has a lot of fun with this.

Today’s Google doodle is a nice tribute:

I sort of feel like posting YouTubes of a bunch of cool Prince songs but they have a habit of disappearing. This, however, is mandatory:

Also, I hope this remains up:

edit: here's a nice writeup from Esquire. And Pierce’s take. They also have links to more performances.
