Consternation waves
So liv suggested a few ideas in chat, so I thought I'd try it out here by superimposing two images. Might need a bit of tweaking to get it right though.
The idea is to have a div with the background image of the div showing the waves, and then the smiley can be perched inside the waves

Re: Consternation waves
I want a version with the arrow and label too! To me, that is essential to the awesomeness of the consternation waves.

Re: Consternation waves
I did, but I don't think it's a viable replacement for the arrow and label. Just looking at them they could be any waves!1

Re: Consternation waves
Okay - too tired to think straight now. But it looks like it could work with a bit more tweaking.

Done. Remember, you won't see it parse until you post. Preview doesn't work with HTML.

Re: Consternation waves
I'm seeing a black line passing horizontally through the waves at the bottom of 'W'.

Re: Consternation waves
cep, is there a way to make the smiley within the waves centered automatically, both in width and height? The absolute position is a problem for wider-than-standard smilies.

Re: Consternation waves
There's also the problem to overcome where the waves are positioned differently for IE users compared to Firefox and Safari, Opera, etc. users.
I suppose what you really want is a new tag? So you put something like:
[consternation]Can't find image for: ;chicken;[/consternation]
...and the tag makes its best shot at fitting the waves around the smiley - and it would look the same in all browsers.
If the chosen smiley is way too big to fit, then you get a mess - I suppose a mess is better than a message saying it can't be done?

Re: Consternation waves
OK
cep, putting a {br} after the absolute divs is not reliable for larger smilies. But putting a {div position:relative height:nnn}{/div} - with a calculated height - is perfect.
