I wish to register my interest in sources of information and/or analysis on this.
Started looking and first place I went was the CDC. This page has some info and you can configure the tables/graph a couple different ways.

Pop out of the graph is here.

Shows that Jan 18 was a bad flue season and also that excess deaths are well up since COVID. Even with measures like mask wearing and lockdowns. They also use a threshold for excess deaths that is quite high. In the last 2 years before COVID it was only passed a couple of times. Also most all of the 100 weeks before COVID are well below the line they are using.

Ok, I like this site even better. Excess mortality during the Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) - Our World in Data

I haven't compared numbers between here and the CDC yet, but I like the graphs and how configurable they are much more here.

Here is a nice one of the USA (can be found here).

EDIT: Spot checked around 10 weeks and they match the CDC graph pretty well.

Quote:
The raw death counts help give us a rough sense of scale: for example, the US suffered some 275,000 more deaths than the five-year average between 1 March and 16 August, compared to 169,000 confirmed COVID-19 deaths during that period.

Louisiana state congressman, republican Luke Letlow, dies of Covid before he can take office. He was 41. (sfgate)

Itís fine though, itís just the flu, itís pretty common for healthy 40 year oldís to just up and die before office, no biggie...

Distilleries that made hand sanitizer won't face hefty fee for helping out during pandemic - CNNPolitics

When I saw the story the other day about those fees, I said "NO!" really loud, so you are welcome for my service.

I was curious if this changed their normal taxes as all potable alcohol is highly taxed and found this interesting article from april.
Covid-19: Distilleries could make hand sanitizer, but FDA forces them to use only undrinkable alcohol

In short, *if* the distiller could find the denaturing ingredients to turn the hand sanitizer bitter or make those drinking it vomit, they could stop paying their potable taxes, which made the denaturing ingredients scarce and jump in price. Otherwise they had to pay drinking alcohol tax on their hand sanitizer.

Also, lightly addressed in the article is that not all distilleries are well prepared for making high proof alcohol, which is most easily made in a column distiller instead of the older fashion gooseneck. Skills like knowing how to bring over the good flavors and mix batches really means nothing to firing up some flavorless everclear.

So many things in the world could be improved if only Pea would say "NO!" loudly enough to each of them.

It would put too much strain on the fabric of reality. This awesome power must be used judiciously, only in the most dire situations, such as a Creed reunion. :chin:

This really should go in the “Morons with Epidemics” thread. But we don’t have one, so I’m just going to leave it here.

Partisan differences in physical distancing are linked to health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic

From the linkPartisanship was more strongly associated with physical distancing than numerous other factors ... Additionally, county-level consumption of conservative media (Fox News) was related to reduced physical distancing. Finally, the observed partisan differences in distancing were associated with subsequently higher COVID-19 infection and fatality growth rates in pro-Trump counties.

Something I've been thinking about a lot lately is how several years ago, there was an article about how women in heterosexual relationships are expected to be responsible not just for cooking and cleaning and childcare, but for things like maintaining relationships and keeping track of appointments and things too. And somehow, it was a great revelation for a lot of them. Weird it took them so long to notice, but good.

The problem is that the article in question coopted the term 'emotional labor' to describe that. But the term emotional labor was coined back in the 70s to describe a specific JOB skill, where people in customer-facing positions are required to maintain a cheery, accepting demeanor at all times, and try to manage customers' emotions as well, and how that specific skill is underappreciated and underpaid, despite it being difficult and downright soul-sucking. The term makes much more sense for its original definition. I'm not even sure why anyone chose to use it to describe that housework thing anyway.

So while I was happy that people were recognizing the sexist double standards pointed out in that original article, it's bothered me how that term got coopted for something else, because it's important. I tried gently pushing back on another forum that was going full bore on that, but people just got defensive about it, so I gave up pretty quickly.

Getting to my ultimate point here, that original definition of 'emotional labor' is pretty much on full display right now, with service workers everywhere being pushed to the front line, required to deal with delusional and often violent COVID deniers, all while maintaining that cheery customer service demeanor, while not being recognized or compensated for the effort and skill goes into that.

And I regret not going harder at middle+ class women coopting that term for somehow not noticing they've been washing their husbands' nasty panties for them all along.

Twice now I've come across people telling me there are less overall deaths this year than normal in the US and that COVID numbers are overinflated because 'normal' deaths are being labelled as COVID.

If anyone already has a good source for what is actually happening on that front, I'd appreciate you sharing it here.

I'll have time to look myself later, but just thought someone here might already have something bookmarked.
Here are a couple of peer reviewed sources that definitely didn't find that

Quote:
Between March 1 and August 1, 2020, 1 336 561 deaths occurred in the US, a 20% increase over expected deaths (1 111 031 [95% CI, 1 110 364 to 1 111 697]).
Research letter from October 12th

and

Quote:
In this cohort study, the number of deaths due to any cause increased by approximately 122 000 from March 1 to May 30, 2020, which is 28% higher than the reported number of COVID-19 deaths.
article from July 1st

this one runs through october.

Quote:
Weekly numbers of deaths by age group and race/ethnicity were assessed to examine the difference between the weekly number of deaths occurring in 2020 and the average number occurring in the same week during 2015-2019 and the percentage change in 2020. Overall, an estimated 299,028 excess deaths have occurred in the United States from late January through October 3, 2020, with two thirds of these attributed to COVID-19.
Excess Deaths Associated with COVID-19, by Age and Race and Ethnicity - United States, January 26-October 3, 2020 - PubMed

Ive not seen any source that doesn't hold there are excess deaths, even the papers that suggest that the total count could be lower don't argue there is no excess death

Like this one that argues that we can ignore 80k of the extra dead because there are 10 percent more americans age 65 and older this year than the average of 5 years.

Quote:
From March through August 2020, 1 671 400 deaths were registered in the United States, including 173 300 COVID-19 deaths. An average of 1 370 000 deaths were reported over the same months during 2015 to 2019, for a crude excess of 301 400 deaths (128 100 nonĖCOVID-19 deaths).

Oh, hey, wait. I saw someone saying that excess deaths had decreased overall, but it was completely, absurdly cherrypicked from death rates for little kids. (Who are less likely to die of COVID, and also less likely to be going to school in person, or swimming in community pools or playing on playgrounds this past year.)
