I know little about the sending aspect of cremated remains - my brother-in-law handled that in SA - but I do have experience of receiving cremated remains at the freight terminal at Heathrow. The main consternation was that they required, in addition to my personal id, proof that I worked for a registered courier company. Which I did not.

It took a lengthy "I'll have to check with my supervisor" visit to the back office, which I imagined ended with an abrupt "it's human remains of a family member, of course he doesn't have to be a courier" and the person came back all apologetic.

Take what organs you can and donate them to others. Use whatever else you can for science, and then cremate me when you're done.

Speaking of mortality, it’s been on my mind for a while now. Not internet issues, but planning our burial plots in advance so my girls have less on their plate besides bereaving one or the other of us. Or heaven forbid both of us at the same time. We do have adequate, not great , life insurance policies but the cost of coffins and grave plots are astronomical. We will absolutely not go through a mortuary. It’s an added insane expense and they are boxy and uncomfortable. At my fils wake it was more than standing room only. We will have our wake at our church as well as the funeral. The cost is customary, and my church and priest know my family. We just have to get that in order and it will be a HUGE weight off my mind.

Incidentally, I saw a billboard add advertising cremation and urns starting at 99 dollars. Ugh what horrible taste those advertisers have.

Yah, I like that, too.

I could have them turn me into some of those, then the Mrs can chuck them at the grandkids when they get to acting up.

I tried to donate my body to science.
Filled out all the forms and sent them in.

Their reply was basically, "We'll get back to you."

I have had occasion to update the estate documents since I got some additional deferred equity comp, and decided to update the ol carcass plans as well. Assuming there's any of me left that's useable, my husk is going here: Western Carolina University - Forensic Anthropology Body Donation Information

Basically, if I'm unembalmed and otherwise meet the criteria, my estate will pay for a funeral director to ship me there. No embalming, no funeral, etc. They will put my corpse out in the woods and use it for forensic anthropology research. Let the bugs and the boars and whatever chow down. They can also use my cremated remains if I have to be cremated for some reason.

Mrs. S and I are both body donors. Assuming that we can afford to continue to live in this area until we no longer live and someone finds the dead one within a short time after they die, the UCSD Medical School Body Donor folks will come take it away, most likely to be carved up by aspiring doctors.
