I remember all the USA warhawks in 2003 saying they’ll remember Britain’s loyalty for quietly disposing of the Downing Street Memo.

ahh, yes, the Daily Express being furious that the EU transit network plan does not include plans for rail lines inside the UK, which is not part of the EU.

Re: Get Brexit Done
Brexit has completely failed for UK, say clear majority of Britons - poll | Brexit | The Guardian
Some great details in here (I'm sure the 9% who think Brexit has been good for the NHS have some interesting things to say) but this is just amazing to me:
Quote:
More than half (53%) of leave voters now think that Brexit has been bad for the UK’s ability to control immigration
|
Things were better when UK immigration was managed by foreigners, I guess.
Is it possible that a huge number of leavers have simply died since 2016?

They do show a couple of routes through Switzerland - also not part of the EU.

Well, yes.
The Venn diagrams for Brexiteers and anti-vaxxers, and older people, and people who blame their health problems on other people, are not insignificant.

Yeah, and a couple that go into the UK. But Switzerland is between parts of the EU, so it makes sense for the lines to cut through it. The UK is not really a practical way to run rail from one part of the EU to another, for the most part?

Re: Get Brexit Done
The route from Ireland through Wales and England to France is the preferred one for most road freight and passengers: it swaps a long sea crossing for two short sea crossings - one of which can be done via a tunnel (trucks carried by train).
I don't know how the economics work out for freight carried by rail: presumably, if the single, longer, sea crossings are more economic, then those routes would already have been generally used before Brexit.

It doesn't show any stops in Switzerland, but it's also relevant to note that Switzerland is part of the Schengen area, and thus does not require passport control to enter, while the UK is not.
You might also think that a line through the non-EU former Yugoslav countries would make sense (connecting, e.g. Greece and Croatia) for the same reason as cutting through Switzerland, but those countries are not part of the Schengen area either.
So my guess is that's the main reason.

Re: Get Brexit Done
It's certainly not traditional and I get why that would bother some people. I'm not sure people interpret it the way Charles wants them to?
Nonetheless, I kind of like it

Re: Get Brexit Done
Yeah, I like it too. Many of the attempts at ridicule seem to me to worthy of ridicule themselves.
It's a skilled and immediately recognisable likeness, and the vast expanse of monochrome red is surprising and for me at least, disturbing. It raises a question—arguably the most important question that can be asked of a royal portrait—is the artist's vision respectful or insulting?
I don't know the answer. But that doesn't mean it's bad.
