Re: One of those 'Wat'cha Listenin' To?' threads.
Today's the first anniversary of our last official concert, with no end in sight. To "honor" the occasion, here's the opener from Opeth's last tour. Pay no attention to that song title shown on the vid; the real title is Svekets prins (Opeth recorded English versions of all the songs on their latest album, but played only the Swedish versions in concert).

Re: One of those 'Wat'cha Listenin' To?' threads.
So the other day an old Black Oak Arkansas tune showed up in my YouTube feed. I confess having listened to a lot of BOA as a youngster, but srsly, it's been decades. How did they know? (True, I've been listening to a fair amount of Elvin Bishop lately, but it's a long trip between Elvin and BOA.)
Anyhoo, that got me to thinking about why I listened to so much BOA back in the day. The answer, of course, is Tommy Aldridge.
Aldridge certainly didn't invent double-bass drumming and wasn't its most famous practitioner, but he turned it into an art form. In an era before the advent of foot pedal tech that can make most any single-basser sound like a double-bass god, Aldridge stood out. He built his drum kit around the double-bass sound and really made it all work.
Here he is in 1973 with BOA:
And 43 years later, at age 65, playing at a Whitesnake reunion concert:

I did like it, . Atmospheric, but with an early Floyd feel, plus some lovely jazz chords. The vid is appropriately trippy.
I liked the Johnny Cash too, as I have for awhile. Because I ... am a human being! :elephantmansmileywe'llneverhave:

Re: One of those 'Wat'cha Listenin' To?' threads.
As another reminder that it'll be a long, long time before we get back to anything remotely resembling pre-COVID normal, Steven Wilson has announced that he's canceling his European concert tour that was set to start in September. He'll be finishing up a book and working on a couple of partially-finished albums instead.
Ah, well. We'll always have 2018.

Re: One of those 'Wat'cha Listenin' To?' threads.
Wilson put a 10-minute disco-ish song on his latest album. He recently had the legendary Nile Rodgers of Chic fame work with it. Rodgers got it down to a tight three and a half, and results are impressive.

Re: One of those 'Wat'cha Listenin' To?' threads.
Intro from a totally hammered roadie/truck driver ... a blistering live version of Bodhisattva from the original lineup ... a quintessentially 70s outro that started last Wednesday and just keeps building until it ends about a week and a half from now ... this one's got it all.

Re: One of those 'Wat'cha Listenin' To?' threads.
I never used my main Apple ID to subscribe to the pay version of iTunes, so I gots my 3 free months of listening to whatever the fuck I want. So I searched for Max Webster, because I spent my teen years playing their Universal Juveniles album over and over. (It's like Jethro Tull or Pink Floyd - nobody in the band is named Max and/or Webster.) I've not heard them since the vinyl and cassette days.
Turns out there's a box set called The Party, with almost every damned thing Max ever recorded. That turns out to be 5 studio albums ( UJ was the 4th 5th), 2 live, 1 of Kim Mitchell's solo albums that might as well be a Max album, plus assorted outtakes.
This is awesome stuff. Yes, there's some prawg in it, but it never strays into artiste mode, staying grounded in jazz/rock, and always, always, being really damned fun. It's like Zappa, but without all the damned talking, plus some Alan Parsons and Steely Dan, but with a non-naive joyfulness that I don't know what to compare to. It really is a party.
PLUS, since they're Canadian and went on a world tour with Rush ( Moving Pictures era), one of the tracks on Universal Juveniles, "Battlescar," was recorded live-but-in-studio with all the members of both bands, including a hilarious contrast between Kim's low-end tenor/baritone and Geddy's what-the-fuck-is-this-and-why-are-the-windows-broken.
So that's a way of introducing this, which is not in the box set, which you should goddamned well check out on your own. Instead, here's a much more recent thing, with Kim Mitchell of Max and Alex Lifeson, doing "Battlescar" for the first (maybe only) time together in front of a live audience.
That might be Gary McCracken, bassist for the classic-lineup Max, or not. Whoever it is has the unenviable job of filling in for Geddy Lee's early 80s voice, and, well, he nearly gets there.

Re: One of those 'Wat'cha Listenin' To?' threads.
One of the best concerts I ever attended happened in late 1976 at the Richfield Coliseum, a roughly 20,000-seat venue in a middle-of-nowhere area south of Cleveland, OH. The venue is long gone, but the memories remain.
The headliner was Black Sabbath (the original Osbourne/Iommi/Butler/Ward lineup), who were everything I'd hoped and more. The immediately preceding act was Boston, of More Than a Feeling/Don't Look Back/Smokin' fame. They turned out to be pretty goddamn terrific as well.
But the real subject of this here post is these motherfuckers, the opening act. My concert-going buddy and I had never heard of them, but they took the stage and proceeded to kick our lily-white 18-year-old asses.
