Can a bisexual come out?
Bey's thread had me wondering about telling your parents that you are bisexual. I understand that this may seem fake, although I am truly attracted to both sexes, almost more leaning to the female side. My husband knows this and just figures that a woman's sexuality is more fluid.
My issue is that I have a very homophobic mother. I destroyed two potentially long term lesbian relationships because I couldn't come out. Late last year I finally told my mom about the abuse that I used to post about in here, and was disowned for two months before I told her that it was insane. Maybe she actually needs to know that if I left my husband, as she wants, I would probably end up with a woman?

Re: Can a bisexual come out?
Of course you can, and it doesn't seem fake at all.
I sort of think the ideal would be if everyone had to come out if they wanted their sexuality known to someone; and if we were appropriately skeptical when people claimed to be heterosexual, because a lot of gay and bisexual people do have heterosexual phases. That's why gold stars are such a thing.

Bisexuals can come out and go in. They swing both ways. Kind of like those batwing doors on saloons in western movies.

Re: Can a bisexual come out?
I went to vote with my parents during last year's presidential election and afterwards the political conversation lead to my dad asking me if I was gay. I told them both that I'm bisexual, which didn't seem to excite them at all. I've questioned if there was ever a time when they might have been angry with me for it, earlier in their lives, but I kind of just want to take credit for making my mom and dad more LGBT-friendly.

Re: Can a bisexual come out?
Did I mention my parents are Christian yahoos? I think my dad suffers some serious delusions about the world because of conservative news media and general patriotic beliefs... It always felt like a gamble for me to admit to being bisexual, but that was very much a general feeling I gathered from people. I was also 16 when I first began to realize it, and being new to high school scared me. I didn't really realize until recently how much I was limiting myself to be ashamed about it. I'm dating a girl, and I've only ever really dated girls. It's interesting because most people do think I'm straight because it's not something that needs to be talked about with everyone, especially because I live happily with the person I am with and I don't want her to doubt that I love her in anyway... but it's still something I mostly keep to myself, and so it's interesting the eyebrows it raises from my real friends when someone joins in and gives me some homophobic or misogynistic line expecting me to laugh, especially my girlfriend who is well aware of my sexuality. Lately a lot of random people have started conversations with me and later on makes some quip about gay gestures/ speaking voices, which I sometimes wonder if it is a projection about the way I carry myself sometimes, mostly likely it's just a common boring stereotype, but man I still really get a kick out of some people's ignorance.

So I guess what I am trying to say is; Be Yourself. Life is too short to live by everyone else's expectations.

I'm glad you mentioned parents in the OP, because just based on the thread title I was like, "Oh, honey, who do you think you've been kidding?"

They can, but the real gays won't come to our coming-out parties. Snooty faggier-than-thou bastards.

Re: Can a bisexual come out?
Oh, are there actually coming out parties? I may tell my mom one day. I am still very scared to. I already went through the wrath of mom for publicly supporting gay marriage on fb for all of my family to read. Then I ultimately voted for Obama, and rubbed his win in the conservative friends list faces. I think I need to give her heart a break for a while.

She also is unhappy that I had a discussion about vaginas and penises and what is acceptable to say to my son on my page.

Can a heterosexual 'come out' or is that politically incorrect?

I guess if you're in some situation where most people just assume you're something other than heterosexual, you could come out. That's probably a relatively rare situation to be in. Also, obviously, you should be very concerned about political correctness.

The Maoist in me, is concerned about political correctness, and also confused by the current examples.
The rest of me is concerned that there is a Maoist in me.

Re: Can a bisexual come out?
I tried it once, but my mother thought I was joking, so I left the conversation at that. I don't really need to do it especially since I have a greater preference for women.
