Default Re: What's up with you?

I've seen the sideways thing on several forums. It's because phone cameras encode information in the image to say whether the phone was in portrait or landscape mode when the picture was taken. And then either/both the forum software and browser "helpfully" attempt to rotate the image to orient it properly. And between them, they usually make a complete hash of the job.

If you're posting from a PC, the solution is to use some image editing software to get the image the right way up and then export it as a new image - this strips the orientation information from the image. It also allows the image to be resized (smaller). Modern phones produce high resolution big photo files that unnecessarily take up space on the forum's server. But that's not really an option when you're posting from a phone or tablet - or if your PC doesn't have image editing software, or you don't know how to drive it.

Nice mug, by the way. I want some of those.

I got my car battery replaced this week as the car wouldn't start last weekend. The weather has been quite cold and the car battery was 7 years old so the culprit was obvious.
Wouldn't start again today. It has been pretty cold (the driver's side door is also frozen shut, requiring minimal acrobatics to get in) but come on!

On the other hand, I shall take this opportunity of time and cold weather to defrost the freezers.

Clearly a defective new battery. They should replace it immediately.

Probably not the battery. Charged it, managed to start, drove daughter to her father's. On the back, after about 15 minutes of driving the car fainted at the side of the road. Restarted after 10 minutes ok, and I limped home. Probably some fuel issues? Got some additive to put in the tank. Hoping for the best.

But the trust is gone.

I suspect serious electrical / onboard computer issues. I mean not that you should worry at all.

Could be a faulty alternator, or slipping/broken drive belt that turns the alternator.

(The alternator is the little generator that charges the battery, when the engine is running).

Thing is, after 10 minutes of sitting in a comatose car that was rapidly becoming less shelter than a dead tauntaun and wondering if in my useless panic I could Google and call a towing company before my phone battery followed suit, I tried the ignition again, which I had of course tried initially, and it started perfectly!
Someone figured it might have to do with the fuel freezing or rather moisture in the tank clogging up the fuel filter.

Battery charging again now.

Using the scraper as a crowbar worked on the other doors that just had the edges frozen shut, but I suspect the driver's door had the lock itself not open up when it claimed to be. I put lock melty stuff into it, but that had no effect on the part of the door where it clasps onto the frame. But also that door opened once the car was stored in a warm place. Actually, I suspect it popped open while I was shopping.

I'm starting a new job on Monday. The income will be nice but I'm possibly more excited (to the extent that I'm excited at all) about having some structure imposed after five months of doing whatever tickles my fancy.

I have given up on 3D printing for the moment. The last time I tried to cope with some printer issue I was having, I didn't get it working. The repair was successful, but I ran into control problems. I may have switched 2 plugs, but I don't think so. I think the firmware on the my printer just sucks.

I think I may give it away or sell it and wait until I have a backlog of ideas before considering a new one.

I have a really inconvenient case of mallet/baseball finger, right ring. Looks a bit like this (mine is uglier):

It doesn't hurt - didn't much when it happened, either, as I was just trying to tuck a sheet in past the nightstand that sits up against it. So it's only a minor inconvenience; I just have to keep it in a splint until the tendon heals. In six. Fucking. Weeks. Yes, I'm right handed. :fuuu:

Being a hardcore touch (:bunnythrust:) typist, it's taking some time to get my dumbass hands to adjust to it. The fucking :lcat: and :periodcat: keys are now the bane of my existence.

ETA: I hadn't even read the whole page I linked.

Occasionally, a minor force such as tucking in a bed sheet will cause a mallet finger.

I didn't plan for any 3d printer inception. I bought an M3D crane dual when they kickstarted it. It was working well for a while, and then I started having trouble. When I finally got back to it, I discovered a nut that held a filament drive had come loose, and that was one reason I was getting inconsistent and crappy prints. I fixed it and downloaded new firmware, but the company basically only tests the M3D crane series with a single or quad head, and I bought the dual head version. I have to do all this extra work to set it up, and I either didn't take careful enough notes from the last time, or something else went wrong. It's not working properly.

I just don't have the energy to deal with it. Besides, I'm more interested in getting back into my prime hobby. I now have more table space for microscope stuff.
