I have always been an independent centrist rejecting political -isms.
I went though the music and drug scene in the 60s-70s. As I gt older I came to believe that for me it was an empty waste of time.
Culturally the elimination of the stigma of using drugs along with the promotion of drugs by the then counter-culture has led to our 'drug crisi' today.
Listen to the live rcording of the song Cocaine by Clapton with the crowd singing along. 'Cocain!!!'.
Take away the soical pressure against single woman parent and now we have a 'child day care crisis'. Mostly single women who can not afford day care.
What I learned with age is we reap what we sow, we are our own worse enemies.
I was an engineer. Knew many people who went through it and ende up mainstream with families and traditional jobs. Engineering tends to be conservative.

Re: Philosophy Misc
I think we've had that statement before, maybe not that exact tweet, and I need to remind y'all again that what's listed as "far left" is not a far left position outside of 'Murica, it's just "left".
("Far left" might be "we're going to exterminate the upper class / the capitalists". Which ... is still better than the far right.)

It's what you might call misobservational comedy. And as such, it sucks.

Listen to the lyrics of that song. It's not a party song, it's about being hooked.

But I wasn't laughing at that one, more of a 'huh, interesting'.
I really should have named the other one Lolitics.

Re: Philosophy Misc
This could be literature or word meanings but this word usage has grated on my nerves for decades for exactly the reason the thinkpiece lays out.
So just why don't you just click on the link so you can just read:

In other news, I think we could usefully use "just" in any and all replies to obey.

So just why don’t we just do just that?

This:
Quote:
Two things:
1. Humans have radically limited information & have consistently proven AWFUL at predicting the future.
2. Humans are very, very, very, very good at bullshitting themselves, ie, "motivated reasoning" that leads to conclusions congenial to one's priors.

Intellectual humility would suggest that, if our reasoning leads us to a place where we've justified ourselves acting in ways that violate most people's intuitions & produce proximate suffering, we should be *very, very suspicious that we have bullshitted ourselves*.

Quote:
when your reasoning has put you in a Bahamas villa, out of your head on drugs, scamming people out of money ... you should take it as a near-certainty that you have bullshit yourself somewhere along the way. "Rationality demands I indulge my basest desires." Probably not!

Re: Philosophy Misc
Random thought burp:
Egypt was mostly polytheistic. There were 42 'Laws of Ma'at' in the form of negative confessions.
Example:
2. I have not robbed.
3. I have not stolen.
A bunch of Hebrews stumbled out of there and wandered around in Sinai for a number of years, refining the 42 Laws down to a few, and added a few more of their own to make it into monotheistic.
Then they stomped their way into Canaanite and Hittite lands becoming colonial assholes in the process.*
So, the transformation of polytheism to monotheism leads to greater sense of group belonging and with rigid enforcement by commandment (1. You shall have no other Gods before me) less tolerance of other groups.
Iterate a few thousand years and you get things like Fordlandia and the daddy knows best in all things attitude. All starting with one ghod who just wouldn't play nice with others.
*That Jesus guy stomping through the temple kicking ass on 'money changers' (Canaanite pimps for temple prostitutes) because nothing pisses off Yahweh more than indigenous people practicing their religion. Asterisk because some dude on the internet said this bit and I asked for some sort of source because although it sounds about right, I couldn't and still can't find any supporting scholarly study on that. Colonial assholes, however, is just how people been for a long time. Maybe since monotheism.

Re: Philosophy Misc
Quote:
“It’s important to me because I grew up here in Reykjavik,” he says. “I grew up with parents who did not have a lot, I have a disease, and there’s a lot of things that are needed in my life that our society has provided for. I know that if I had been born in other countries that don’t have the same kind of system that we do, I would not have been able to do what I did. School was free, health care was free, I went to university and got a couple degrees, which is mostly free. If I had been raised in, for example, America, that would not have been possible. We have a functioning society, and I believe the tax system is the best way to pay for all that.”
