The miscellaneous finding I wanted to post is this:
The http protocol (you know, the one that's the backbone of the web, famous for 404 errors ) has a separate error code for Unavailable For Legal Reasons. The protocol equivalent of "this video is not available in your country".

The error code is 451.

I finally bought a PC this year. The last one I bought was in 2000. On that one, at least I had a system software disk to load if my software ate itself.

Now, don't have a clue what to do when my software gets stuffed.

Assuming you bought a big brand name PC they almost always include software for creating your own recovery disks nowadays.

Misleading headline.

advised users of affected router models to perform a factory reset, or at a minimum to reboot.

The core of the malware in question survives a reboot. I haven't seen a claim that the photobucket account and the knowitall dot com or whatever fallback domain are the only channels it has.
