Calling Plant Woman
Can you tell me what this is?
It's a common plant here in the NW in springtime and smells like honeysuckle. But I don't know the name. The flowers themselves are small; about the size of a blueberry blossom.

What on Earth makes you think that Plant Woman could help?

Back off, Human Torch. Or there'll be only cinders left for PW to use for making a positive identification.
Bet she could still do it, though....

Easy. She's made out of plants and her superpower is to use them to take over the world.

It looks like some variety of andromeda polifolia.
ETA: It's a Pieris japonica, for sure.
Here's a stock photo:

Pretty!
While you're here, PW/godfry, when is the best time to plant a lilac bush/tree? I want to get one for my mother.

Um...Any time now. I'd say that you might want to get one at a nursery when it is in bloom, so you KNOW it is the color you want. That said, my experience with lilacs is that the darker purples are the more fragrant.
Try Fox Hill's site for info on care and planting. For bloom times and pruning suggestions, try this Garden Ideas site.

I dn't normally do this because it's a bandwidth hog, but I want you to see what this little $109 point-and-shoot camera can do in macro mode:

From the link:
"obovate to narrow oblanceolate, lustrous and glabrous, with a cuneate base narrowing to a yellow petiole, with entire to finely serrated margins"
You could make beautiful poetry from that description.

Just one? That's like giving someone one piece of popcorn.
Lilacs travel in herds in their natural state, defending their territory in straight lines.
Duh.

Plant descriptions are pretty cool.
Scandalous, too. Linnaeus' plant classification system was condemned as "loathsome harlotry".

Re: Calling Plant Woman
Dang, a dollar late and a dollar short. These are beautiful evergreen shrubs, the lily of the valley shrub, Pieris japonica is one of my fav shrubs I have growing. Mine look more like Godfry's with the red stems and new leaves opening red, eventually fading to green. Slow growers, but well worth the wait.
You can view the new red leaves here and mouse over the bottom thumbnail. It likes our acidic Northwest soil so it's a popular shrub here.
Plant your lilacs now if the ground is workable. If you are still under two feet of snow, wait.

Really? Is that from sticking your nose in the flower? Cuz they aren't sending pollen out into the air, they invite the bees to the pollen with their fragrance. Could it be another tree or grasses that send their pollen out into the air about the time these are in bloom? Kind of reminds me how people think they are allergic to goldenrod, Solidago canadensis but it's the ragweed they are having a reaction to, that blooms at the same time.

Well, it was in the 70s two days ago, and now we've got snow flurries.

I think it's the smell not the pollen. It sort of burns. I like daphne too, but it's hard to take in large doses. People here tend to plant japonica like it was the only plant in the world.
