If it is pinned to the dollar like that then it can't be used to speculate. So I think that would reduce the amount of fraud and scamminess.

Reduce, but not eliminate. It depends a lot on how the stablecoin is kept stable.

I have my bank linked to PayPal, and that's putting a lot of trust in this company. Just coming out with a crypto coin is enough to make me question that trust.

Holy shit, everyone. Practice file recovery!

My first 2 backups, I "Let Windows decide" what to back up, and it didn't pick up on my "pictures" folder - almost 440G of pictures! I re-ran the backup with more folders added and was able to recover a file I renamed.

Hot new tech idea: a paper shredder that scans documents and stores them on cloud storage in case you need to unshred.

Or, instead of shredding, why not snail-mail post the documents directly to Google

Think of the savings storing everything on the cloud servers in China.

I always scan docs and save as PDF, the feed them to the shredder. Kind of the same thing, I guess. But my "Cloud" is my home storage.

Bought an external SanDisk SSD 2 TB drive. Nice little unit. Works fast. Problem is that its default formatting set at a 1024 cluster size. So what was 60 gigs on the hard drive I copied from is 1.3 terabytes on the SSD. Reading up on this remarkable feature, I learn that "Oh you should only be using that for large files."

Yeah well imma reformat this thing to a smaller cluster size. Yeah I've read that will cost me in terms of speed and possibly drive capacity, but if it's going to multiply file sizes likes this what's the point.

Why isn't there an ISO standard for a date without the year attached? Christmas is always Dec 25. Leap day is always Feb 29. I share a birthday with Mindy Kaling, but not the year. Literally nobody else has ever had a need for this?

ChatGPT keeps trying to tell me to use the truncated representation that was deprecated in 2004, despite agreeing that it was deprecated and that ISO 8601-1:2019 doesn't support date without year, lol

For internal stuff I guess you could just use the deprecated format anyway e.g. "--12-25" (with appropriate comments). The recurrence format in ISO 8601-2:2019 extensions might also work for some use cases e.g. "R/1970-12-25/P1Y"

For all the uses I needed ISO standard guidance, the date needed to be as traceably precise as feasible, necessitating the inclusion of a year. (This was for manufacturing and certification.)

I use 1900 as a default/flag year when the year isn't required. I would have chosen year 0 or -9999 or similar, but lots of software freaks out at dates before 1900.

0 would be a perfect default, since there was no year 0. You wouldn't even have to have a separate "notSet" flag.

I don't use a separate flag. If the year is 1900 it means year not set. This is tough on people who are mostly now 123 years old, but at least they're more fortunate than those even older, where the database software won't even accept their birthday was a real date.

I suppose historians who often need to enter earlier dates in their records must use different database software, or split their dates across two or more fields rather than use the ISO format to fill a single field.

Oh yeah I didn't mean necessarily you specifically, I just meant the general case of having an unset value that's indistinguishable from a zero/default value. That there was no Year 0 means that 0 is available to fill that need. Not that anybody was using gregorian or julian calendar at the time.

A spam call just left a voice mail trying to hand shake with a Fax machine.

Given the surprise information that there is no ISO date standard without the year attached I can’t see how they didn’t know what decade we currently live in.

Apparently the extensions standard ISO 8601-2 includes negative years and exponential notation for years. Software support may be lacking, though.
