Default Coffee enema anybody?

Has anybody tried a coffee enema? Just a "yes, I liked it/yes, it was horrible" reply will suffice - I don't need intimate details. :giggle:

It has been recommended to me but I'm a bit unsure about it. Apparently, they are good for the system and there is a home kit here that is a reasonable price.

Yeah, my sister-in-law is having colonic hydrotherapy at the moment to try and help with IBS. She's the one who's put us on to this coffee malarky!

I don't do colonics. My personality would undergo too radical a shift if I were suddenly no longer full of shit.

Detox your world.com? My woo-woo alarm went off when I saw that; there are even news stories about this being advocated as a cure for cancer.

Colonic hydrotherapy is an alternative medicine practice. I would check with someone qualified to see whether a coffee enema can harm you, at least in the long-term (it probably wouldn't kill you to do it, since apparently it's relatively popular). I can't imagine why coffee would be any better for the system than warm water as far as cleansing is concerned, but certain substances can be harmful if taken rectally. I suspect coffee wouldn't be too bad for you, other than any negative effects that caffeine has, but on the other hand I sincerely doubt it actually has any positive effect, either.

Being on spring break, I can't use my library's academic journal databases at the moment, but a quick search of PubMed reveals that there are known cases where colonic irrigation can cause damage and infection, without having any demonstrated benefit.

Wasn't Janet Jackson infamous for advocating these? Before she got infamous for that other thing?

From here:

A word to the wiseThe biggest Danger of Coffee Enemas is associated with the material itself: coffee. The majority of individuals injured while performing an enema using coffee simply used the liquid before it had time to properly cool. Using coffee that is too hot can cause great injury to both your anus and your intestinal tract, leaving you in great pain due to potentially dangerous burns. You should carefully test the temperature of coffee or any liquid you choose to use as an enema to ensure it is not hot enough to cause injury.

So no pouring hot coffee up your ass. Check. You might want to make a note of that, Lees.

Would the caffeine be absorbed? I don't see why not, given time ... but isn't the idea of an enema that the liquid is washed out straight away?

I think it does get absorbed, Joe, because they recommend not doing it at night because of the effects of the caffeine.

I checked out a bunch of websites for more info on the subject and found it interesting that they all advocate using a French press or the stovetop method to brew the coffee. What's wrong with drip, I wonder? :chin:
