Ingress
A quick search tells me a few of you have played or are playing Ingress. I just received an invite yesterday and it was the first I'd heard of it; now I'm ready to sacrifice my soul to it. Short of a paycheck or a fire, it's the most compelling reason to leave the house I've had in years!

Re: Ingress
Welcome, Agent!
Qingdai is hardcore and I play casually. The fielding geometry can be fun and it is interesting that the game inverts the assumed roles of offensive and defensive play- blowing up fields is really more defensive and creating links and fields is more offense and makes points for you and your team. It is also good for getting one out of the house and on long walks or bike rides in interesting places!

Re: Ingress
OMG. I am so into Ingress that I was nominated to be a moderator in our local community. I really, really love it. It turns your world into a video game, where you walk around, discover interesting things in your area and you meet people you would never meet normally. Introverted gaming people, Albanians, you name it. My only question is: Blue or Green?
I and Demimonde are enlightened.

Re: Ingress
I started playing this morning when walking the dogs, and now after work for realz. I live in a hick village, but found 5 portals in about half an hour and two of them were unclaimed. Until now...

Re: Ingress
This is the first I've heard of it, but I just downloaded the app and there is a couple near our house on the dog walks. One seems to be the converted-to-house-church at the end of our road.
Next time we're walking the dogs I'll see what happens when I get there. I might need to read up, I don't really understand what I'm supposed to do... like I have an inventory of items, but I don't know what they're for

Re: Ingress
I just pushed random buttons it suggested once at the portal, seemed to work out fine.
What is more confusing is that there is a sort of community, apparently. I get odd cryptic mass messages and not sure if I should respond or if they are spam.

Re: Ingress
I also recommend completing all the in-app training. It's easy to follow and helpful.
Squian and I spent the entire day (and evening) yesterday cruising around Atlanta doing missions and fighting the good* fight, which meant a LOT of walking around in unpleasant weather. However our dedication paid off; I expect to achieve Level 4 by the end of today.
As I hoped I've already seen a lot of things/places I never would've seen if not for this game, so I'm pretty stoked about it.

Re: Ingress
Honestly, the faction messages aren't spam. They are generally other players trying to help you play better, level up or in some cases not block the efforts of international teams fielding efforts. Even if you have no interest in community stuff, which can be a fine herd of nerds, it helps to have some contact. Mostly in our area we communicate through G+, hangsouts or groupme. Canada uses Facebook.

Re: Ingress
I prefer Facebook, hate Google+. Besides, they haven't accepted me into their G+ group yet.
The first in-game-message thing was just a string of symbols followed by usernames of people. I guess it was supposed to spell out a picture or something? A later one today was a welcome message, should I reply to that? With a smiley and a thank you? Keep in mind that Finns do not communicate much, and do not small talk. We see "How do you do?" as an honest question to be replied to with thought and honesty.

So if we're going by the backstory and unfolding drama- are you saying that you are on the side of the Resistance, which wants humans to resist any influences from alien society and wants to put SkyNet in charge; or are you saying that you are on the side of the Enlightened, that want alien society to influence humanity, because humanity is kinda fucked up as is?
Because I should warn you, Qingdai drinks Smurf tears all day long.

Installed it, but won't be able to actually go anywhere till later today or tomorrow. Looks like a fun excuse to get out of the house.

Re: Ingress
@chunks I should confess I didn't put a lot of effort into understanding the story before I chose a faction, it just seemed at a glance like enlightened = kool-aid drinkers and resistance = freethinkers, so of course I went with the resistance.

Re: Ingress
No, it's Enlightened = techno-utopian transhumanists and Resistance = reactionary neo-luddites
Actually I have no idea, but I picked Enlightened.

Re: Ingress
It seemed clear to me that:
Resistance = keep mankind as it is; destructive, fractious, warring, torturing
Enlightened = Help mankind evolve to something better
Seemed like a clear choice

Re: Ingress
I am always amongst the first to welcome our new alien overlords.
Also, I always envision a resistance force to do a lot of guerilla warfare and jumping and shooting and shit, and I have bad knees.
Spent an hour on a walk last night portaling my neighbourhood, and another hour today a little further away. I have walked 12 km so far on the app and this is day three. And it is firmly below freezing out there.

Re: Ingress
I installed the app on my Nexus. It stalled for ages saying something about configuring and alternating between two screens one portrait, one landscape.
And after a reboot it just comes up with some sort of contra-rotating icon in the middle of the screen with INGRESS v1.67.1 underneath. I've no idea what to do next. Perhaps it needs a GPS signal? I'll take it outside tomorrow, if the rain stops...
