This is a fine example of American early racism (scandalously short skirts with undies showing, black people dressed as servants), but a nice example of talent in both dancing and music (check out Slim Galliard playing the piano with the back of his fingers :faint:

Vera Ellen is my Queen of Dance. I dreamed of having legs like hers as a girl.

Lots of musicals played around with blending ballet and tap. Vera combined tap and toe like no one else.

But what she does is do away with the whole trope of Ginger-did-what-Fred-did-backwards-in-heels thing. She masters the same raw physicality that Kelly had in his movements and matches him step by step.

Demi's post reminds me of one the all-time greats who hasn't gotten anything like the love she deserves. Carol Haney was Gene Kelley's assistant choreographer for all of his most famous movies. After she danced with Bob Fosse in Kiss Me Kate and he suggested her for the Broadway production of The Pajama Game. She was so great they actually created a larger roll for her in the play, a role that she also played in the movie, which I dearly love.

Ginger Rogers wrote the following letter to Time magazine in 1975:

Sing it, sister!If the Hustle, the dance with partners [Aug. 25], is a sign of things to come, I embrace it. Dancing with a partner is prettier and friendlier than just standing opposite someone thinking your own thoughts, doing your own thing. It is a social grace, nicer than saying hello and it is fun to exchange bons mots while dancing with an old friend or someone you have just met.

Above all there is something joyous about dancing. There is a sense of taking part and a sense of accomplishment as one fits the steps to the music. It is too bad that the name is not more romantic, but then I guess the young people would not like it.
