Waxing gibbous
Decided to learn my way round the night sky.
When I was a kid I learned to spot the constellations of the southern cross (Crux) and Orion. They're both usually in the sky in the mid-southern latitudes. And the star Achenar, which in combination with Crux is useful in locating south celestial pole approximately. And also the nearby galaxies we call the Magellanic clouds. Need to be away from light pollution for those though.
Now I'm trying to pick up some more. Doesn't help that some of the classic constellations are ridiculous. Like, what the fuck, Eridanus? Achenar is bright and obvious and declined quite southerly, why put it at the end of a meander of unimpressive stars that reaches nearly to the celestial equator? I'm going to have to make up my own sky mnemonics I think.
Also, we get a lunar eclipse on Tuesday. Of course the forecast is "Becoming mostly cloudy with isolated showers."
Jupiter is high and bright in the evening. Stay up late and Mars is looking good.
Anyway, general sky watching thread. And can anyone recommend a good web-based sky chart?

Re: Waxing gibbous
This thread is relevant to my interests. I keep meaning to put in the effort to see various meteor showers that are visible from my area even with light pollution, but I'm too lazy to schedule the optimal viewing periods, which are generally around 11pm-2am local time.

Yeah I manage to miss all the meteor showers. IIRC the best ones aren't all that visible this far south anyway.

I don't know about *web-based* but on Android, Sky Map (formerly Google, now independent) is great. As long as your phone has a compass, which my new cheapo one turns out not to have.
On the laptop, Stellarium.

Turns out Stellarium have a web version.
I prefer a straight out chart over the first person 3D environment style though. I've been using this one but a couple more features and some nicer controls would be good.

This thread has a lot less information about African primate hair removal than I expected.

I think you're looking for waxing gibbons. You'll have to start your own thread for that.

Re: Waxing gibbous
The weather cleared up for the eclipse. We had a conveniently timed totality centred on midnight. Pretty cool, but I wasn't able to get away from light pollution so I only checked progress occasionally instead of staying out to watch for extended periods.

Light pollution? In New Zealand? Another preconception shattered.

The sun is the source of most light pollution

Re: Waxing gibbous
Can we get Ensign Steve to wax the gibbous for a bit, if he's not too busy waxing the singularity?
