The World's Most Awkward Taxidermy

That reminds me of 'The Nondescript'



A drawing of it formed the frontispiece of Charles Waterton's Wanderings in South America first published in 1825. Waterton's later writings contained a dramatic account of how he had found and killed the man-like creature in the jungle of Guiana.

However, people at the time noted that the facial features of the Nondescript bore a striking resemblance to those of Mr Lushington, a customs inspector who had imposed a heavy import tax on Waterton's collection of carefully stuffed and preserved specimens of South American wildlife when Waterton had returned to Liverpool from an expedition in 1821.

Modern taxidermists have examined the Nondescript and found that it was expertly crafted from the hind quarters of a howler monkey. It seems that Waterton's revenge on the officious Lushington was to use his great taxidermy skill to form the tax inspector's likeness from a monkey's ass.

I forgot to tell you. The other day I petted a pibble and it was so soft. I mean, like super soft that makes feather down feel like sand paper. And then I could only imagine that Flossy is like some cloud-based metasoftness that makes angels weep.

The pibble wuffed at me tho, so I'm a little heartsick.

The pack of ratties have left and will soon be up for adoption at a cool 100% rescue animal based pet shop in San Jose. There are already over a dozen people on the call list, so I expect they will get scooped up fast.

It was fascinating watching the two mommy rats deal with 23 babies. While some mommy rats can get possessive, these two worked together. All the babies were kept in a plastic igloo with the back chewed out which they had pushed into a corner, this created a nice lip at the exit to stop wandering babies. While cleaning their cage and checking the babies I would move the mommies into a different cage. Once everything was fine I would hand back a few babies, but without the igloo this resulted in hilariously frantic mommies picking up a baby and running around with them, trying to find a new place to hide. Rats can be extremely delicate with their teeth and baby ratties are big bags of skin that can be pulled around by it pretty easily (something they use against each other when they get old enough to fight). After causing a few arguments that seemed to be the equivalent of "You didn't put them babies away right!" I started to notice the arguments always went one way. The Igloo has a front (normal) entrance which they kept stuffed with fluff bedding and scraps. Watching one night I saw what I was pretty sure was one teaching the other how to properly and tightly pack and wall off the front entrance. After supervising her trainee a few times, she eventually let the other mommy fix the wall when broken, who fixed it in a new less scattered style. Later it was confirmed that the teacher rat was not only older but had had a litter before and thus the more experienced, and not just being bossy.

They quickly settled on a clear routine, one would feed while the other defended. Did I mention they bite? While they are relaxed and snugly out of their cage; in it with their babies anything intrusive is to be attacked. So often looking in on the babies involved looking past an angry rat trying to box (punch) at me. Other times both would feed (23 babies, 24 nipples), then once all the babies were asleep one would go off to eat or sleep while the other did housework. By which I mean the older mommy wanted the igloo covered with bedding and would spend time building it up on the sides. She also hated anything in with the babies, unfortunately the stupid human disrupting things didn't realize this till she removed my third attempt to add a blanky.

As the little ones got more fur their eyes finally opened and they started to be able to eat normal food, which might sound like a reprieve for the mommies but they also quickly learn how to steal food from mom or to pin her down for a feeding. As they get more active they start to get into little cute ratty play fights which look like cartoon balls collecting others into the fight or spitting them out as it goes. I would love to get slow motion footage of these little fights as they are practically a blur in real time.

Unfortunately they really like to hide from the scary flash and camera. One day I will get a smaller pack and set my strobe to constantly go off next to them so they don't scatter and hide when it's photo time.
