One dark-skinned Arizonian who was asked if he was in the country “illegally” was Rep. Eric Descheenie (D-Chinle).

Rep. Descheenie is a Navajo lawmaker.

“I’m indigenous to these lands,” Rep. Descheenie said. “My ancestors fought and died on these lands. I just told them, ‘Don’t ask me that question.’”

Strictly speaking, his ancestors were also immigrants, but much earlier ones.

Weird things that probably don't mean anything:

• Trump made a lot of business trips to Russia, yet never made any deals for business in Russia that we know of
• Trump does have connections through his real estate business to Russian and Central Asian criminal figures, although I'm sure he had no idea that they were sketchy people given his reputation for scrupulous business ethics
• Trump is nicer to Putin than any other world leader
• Trump doesn't support sanctions against Russia and won't implement legally required sanctions against the country
• Trump didn't do any collusion with Russia, yet he has no interest in what Russia was up to despite having no legal reason to have a problem with this
• Trump claims that Hillary Clinton and the Democrats were actually the ones that colluded with Russia, yet he still doesn't seem to be interested in what Russia was doing interfering in our elections nor does he feel the US should retaliate against them in any way
• Trump is totally innocent, but he fired the director of the FBI investigating him, and publicly said it was about the Russia investigation after offering an obvious lie as the reason first, fired the DOJ official who warned him about Flynn talking to Russia about sanctions, rages against Sessions for recusing himself from the Russia investigation, tried to fire Mueller, repeatedly attacked the deputy FBI director until he resigned and now appears to be preparing to attack the deputy AG who he stands in the way of firing Mueller

This is the behavior of an innocent man who's just fighting back against an unfair witch hunt and probably has no connections to Russia that should be concerning.

Donald Trump just asked Congress to end the rule of law.

But Trump’s speech was also deeply dangerous for an even more important reason: Under the cover of his soothing rhetoric about unity and bipartisanship, Trump called on Congress to give him unprecedented and unquestionably antidemocratic powers: “Tonight,” he said, “I call on the congress to empower every Cabinet secretary with the authority to reward good workers—and to remove federal employees who undermine the public trust or fail the American people.”

By design, it is easy to overlook the true significance of the second half of that phrase. But dwell on it for a moment, and imagine what this would actually look like in practice. Under Trump’s proposal, any Cabinet secretary could decide that, say, a law enforcement official investigating the president had “undermined the public trust” or “failed the American people”—and fire him on the spot. In other words, Trump is calling for an end to any semblance of independence for the IRS, the FBI, the Department of Justice, or any other federal agency.
