Re: CWP #7 - The Hot Dog Poll
Technically, yes. I think. On the basis of almost no knowledge whatever, except for the vague idea that a sandwich is something that isn't bread in between bread.

Oh yeah! Then why is a hamburger a sandwich, but sometimes the two pieces of bread are attached, mr smartytrousers!

Re: CWP #7 - The Hot Dog Poll
It's simple: if the two pieces of bread remain attached, then that hamburger is not a sandwich.
The words 'sandwiched between' imply that there is more than one thing doing the sandwiching. I suppose you could argue that I'm cheating using 'between' - but even when I omit it then:
I was sandwiched by a truck and a huge SUV.
I was sandwiched by a truck.

I've never seen a hamburger with the pieces of bread attached. That's just not right.

ETA: AW SHIT THAT WAS VIVISECTUS SAID THAT.
I'm leaving it, though, because I think ceptimus has also probably seen a taco before.

Re: CWP #7 - The Hot Dog Poll
So if the little seam between the bun halves breaks, the hot dog suddenly transforms into a sandwich?
Somehow I don't think that's what that hobo meant when he said he wanted to show me his magic wiener.

OK, but wait. The bread on a sub sandwich or a cheesesteak is usually hinged. Are those not sandwiches either?

Re: CWP #7 - The Hot Dog Poll
In the UK, we have lots of names to cover ther various types: butties, rolls, barm cakes, sarnies, cobs, and so on...
We never used to call a hamburger a sandwich - we just used to call them hamburgers - but outlets like McDonald's have been (figuratively) forcing their terminology down our throats while we (literally) have been forcing down their products, so now the use of 'sandwich' to describe a hamburger has gained a grudging acceptance here.
When Subway and similar first began selling here, we used to call them 'subs' but I suppose 'roll' is still the main term used for the smaller ones, and sometimes the bigger ones are called baguettes. Personally, I object to calling such things sandwiches, but I suppose the youth of our once great country have probably become brainwashed into calling them sandwiches now.

Re: CWP #7 - The Hot Dog Poll
You should all switch to Dutch because it makes way more sense.
A sandwich consisting of two slices of bread with anything in between said slices is a boterham.
A roll is a broodje no matter what is on it. A broodje hamburger, a broodje hot dog. Separated or not.
And a sub is just a stokbrood (stick bread = the word for French bread).

The poll did not specify that the hot dog was enclosed in a bun, or any other bread (or bread-like) substance. While the term "hamburger" implies that a meat patty is enclosed in a bun, I don't think that the the term "hot dog", absent context, necessarily includes a bun.

Re: CWP #7 - The Hot Dog Poll
If you want to get official the USDA considers a sandwich as two pieces of unattached bread with at least 30% meat in between. So fuck you grilled cheese sammich. Attached bread are considered a roll. Of course all of this only has to be with prepackaged foods and in an interesting twist means prepacked 'open faced' sandwiches have a different set of meat regulations to follow than if they added a second piece of bread.

If you want to get technical the full term for a hamburger is "Hamburger Sandwich" as in meat made famous in Hamburg between two slices of bread.
If you want to get even more confused, some places refer to ground beef as "hamburger."

Re: CWP #7 - The Hot Dog Poll
While the definition of sandwich would seem to include hot dogs, hot dogs are not sandwiches for the simple reason that people don't call them that.
What, you expected language to make sense?
