Stop Closing Forums For Discords, They Are Not The Same Thing

Furaffinity did that and set it up in such a way that you have to verify your phone number with Discord in order to post.

I was looking for some info on a how to so I was still able to search, but the answer wasn’t in the search strings I tried.

I get why a furry community would want to tighten up some screws with the constant volume of DDOS attacks against fur communities but closing the forum for a third party app that requires extra hoops in a community full of queers who may not be out? Yeah. Nah. Every system is either breached or potentially breached.

Internet drama!

Despite major backlash and even many reddit subs planning to go dark on Jun 12th to protest (The last large protest got reddit to ban qanon and anti-vax subs) the CEO of reddit has doubled down on running those who use its APIs out of business, making the much hated reddit app the only app for browsing reddit. In what seems to be a personal grudge he spent part of his AMA slinging mud at one developer in particular.

I had an account on reddit, I made it when I first started playing Pubg mobile to chat tactics but learned that the combination of reddit’s system and it’s users meant it was mostly just a place to bitch, and if your topic didn’t follow community anger (from either bugs or hackers) it not only wouldn’t gain traction but would get downvoted or converted into complaints.

The constantly aggressive and often suspicious of everyone environment was making me grumpy on the internet so I eventually deleted my account a few months ago, but I occasionally browse to see what the latest internet drama is. Today it is reddit.

Reddit is where the community for my third-party Android launcher landed after Google Plus shut down. Our community is a friendly island. There are other subreddits (diabetes-related) that I participate in, as well, where the vibe is generally good.

And sometimes it's fun to watch videos of idiots in cars.

Yeah this. I find the UI unappealing and dislike post-voting. Only sometimes answers the queries that led me there. Not for me.

The web UI and the default app UI are indeed pretty hairy. That's why so many alternate apps have sprung up - using the API - and why the impending $20 million / year charge for the API has caused such a reaction. They want to kill alternate apps, but are not doing anything to make the default experience any more pleasant.

I'm not opposed to post voting for technical question-and-answer topics, though I agree it's shit for social discussion topics. It works really well in the Stack Exchange network of sites - multiple orders of magnitude better than the technical support forums that were the only choice before, where you couldn't tell which were useful questions (vs "oh sorry, I forgot to import math") and which were quality answers among the noise of "you need to provide more information" "have you tried Java instead" "I have this problem too" etc. (That said, the original Stack Overflow itself seems to be suffering some drama, also arising from relying on unpaid moderators, and mistreating them, or providing incentives for destructive behaviour.)

Yes I was talking about Reddit! I don't hate Discord but I don't use it either. I am a member of about 6-10 servers but I find the format too chaotic. Everyone tries to make their server into a "Community" by creating dozens of channels and tags and bots and ... I guess I'm just saying I'm old, but I can't be fucked to learn the social mores of 10 different communities, especially when many of them have overlapping membership. Like the Venn diagram of members of "The Majority Report", "Left Reckoning", and "TMBS" is practically a circle but I have to learn three different community structures to interact with anyone there? What world is this?

Yup, talking Reddit. I've only used Discord for a TTRPG and it was a decent group voice chat/screen sharing/accessory text/dice roller bot combo for that.

If something is unappealing to start off with there has to be a good use case for me to bother seeking alternative UI, and Reddit just doesn't have any I'm aware of that rise above the entry barriers. I'm sure there are some great communities on some subreddits but why trawl through them all to find some when I have ? I also don't have a strong fandom/hobby/special interest that I want to talk about with others that I don't already have some suitable on or offline outlet for doing so. Obviously YMMV.

I agree post-voting is better on e.g. Stack Exchange, although often the green tick from the OP to say "this is the response that most usefully answers my question" is better again.

The good sub reddits out there exist solely through unpaid moderators constantly promoting non-toxic community interactions. The strike by mods to force the removal of anti-vax subreddits was effective in part because it’s their free labor that keeps things running smoothly; messing with the mods is a sure way to break reddit for everyone but teenagers, adult teenagers and those that want to be around them.
