Yeah we got a bowdlerized version of that. To be honest, at this point if somebody offered me a bag of shit in exchange for my outstanding baccalaureate achievements, I'd have to ask exactly how big the bag is.

You could always rinse it out.

Is Property as absurd as my first readings suggest, or is the professor just fucking with us on the first day? I just briefed Goddard v. Winchell and Eads v. Brazelton and this looks horrible. Maybe it's the 19th century writing, maybe it's just the word replevin.

Re: Law skewl
So Bob finds a meteorite on land being leased by Jim and Jim buys it from him? I would've said "screw you, Bob. I'm leasing this land, that rock is mine."
So how does the story end, Chuck?! After the judge rules that it wasn't Bob's to sell because it actually belongs to the landlord, does Jim get his money back from Bob?

Re: Law skewl
If I recall my history correctly, the putative meteorite turned out to be a spacegoing escape vessel for the last survivor of a doomed planet, and Jim and his wife raised him as their own son and taught him to fight for truth, justice, and punching that cock Bob right through the atmosphere if he ever tries to cheat Mom and Dad again.

The general rule at least is that while property may be regulated to a certain extent, if regulation goes to far it will be recognized as a taking. That should clarify everything.

No, dummy, it's that acid-reflux medication. Cheez.
Wait'll you get to the rules against perpetuities. It's like quantum mechanics for law students. You'll struggle through it even though everybody just pretends to understand it. And then the state bar will stick it on the bar exam just to be assholes.
Oh, and they have this thing called a "Fire Drill" where they use fire to drill through your hand. School is a scary, scary thing.

Re: Law skewl
Do we really have that many lawyers here? I didn't realize that. Good people that are lawyers. Do some Pro Bono work once in a while, and give us poor slubs without much of a formal education a little justice now and then, ok?
So sayeth the one who has been good and truly fucked by the system.
I have always been interested in law, but I feel I would be quickly disabused of the notion of justice if I were to enter the field as an ideologue. Also, I am no where near any position in my life to be able to take such rigorous studies seriously.
Congrats to those that can.

Know what's worse than going to law school and ending up owing $200K in student loans? Working your way though law school and owing the feds over $200K in taxes and penalties, that's what.

Re: Law skewl
So, update. First semester is over and it pretty much sucked. I have three exams, nicely spaced out, over the next couple of weeks. It turns out I hated torts (crappy professor), liked property (incredibly amazing professor), and have no strong feelings one way or the other about civil procedure (boooooooorrrrring). Of these, I am most concerned about the property exam, which is first and closed-notes. Sometimes I get my real covenants mixed up with my equitable servitudes, so I has some book-hitting to do.

Re: Law skewl
Hang in there. It gets better.
Civ Pro is really, really, really, REALLY important. You just don't realize it till you're actually doing stuff. One of my profs said it should be taught twice, and that makes some sense.
I loved Torts - the cases sell themselves!

Re: Law skewl
Yah I feel like a learned a lot of stuff in Civ Pro. Important things like jurisdiction and Erie*, cool-sounding things like issue preclusion, and also that I don't want to take Conflict of Laws.
Next semester is Criminal Law, Contracts, and Con Law. I'm hoping crim law will be cool, contracts will finally teach me some shit about privity because that seems pretty fucking important and we just kinda glossed over it in torts and property, and con law won't make me shit my pants daily.
*"Learned" may be too strong here.
