I don't bother to back up or index my music collection.

Life's too short for that shit. If you lose something you really like, you can (nearly) always download a fresh copy.

Mine used to do that but it stopped after I turned of the Fucking Genius and panic-changed some other settings that I have no fucking clue what they are for really. Works fabulously now.

I mostly stick with iTunes as I am a podcast addict, and I can so easily subscribe to the podcasts there and have playlists with both casts and music mixed, and it will automatically remove the podcasts from my iPod once I have listened to them.

But yeah, organizing music in iTunes not so great, though playlists do the job.

But I only use iTunes for Genius. Rest of the time I use whatever else I have installed.

This is half the reason I use iTunes, the other half being I need it to update my phone.

I gave up on having an organized music library or whatever a long time ago.

If you really hate it, there are stable Rockbox ports for iPod 1g through 5.5g, iPod Mini, iPod Nano 1g and iPod Nano 2g, so you aren't stuck with iTunes. Plus it can run Doom, and you know you want to.

I am really quite fond of it, and felt a little dumb for not installing it sooner than I did. It's an automated install, and it only takes a few minutes.

My organization sucks and I've been wanting to scrap it all and start over with a better system. While I have a huge library of a variety of music I currently listen to mostly electronic music and in hour long DJ mixes at that. This means most ideas don't quite fit and automatic organization is just right out.

Lossless is really only good if you plan on playing your music through a high quality loud sound system as that can make the compression apparent. Beyond that music compression is really good just make sure to pick a high quality setting.

My computer speakers (actually a Tivoli Model 2) are good enough that you can tell the difference, and have long-term plans for an HTPC/media server, so I really want to have lossless files whenever possible. The reason I need the on the fly MP3 conversions is because the quality isn't discernable on earbuds or any little speaker I'm likely to use with my portable player, so I'd rather not require all that space in just that one case.

YEAH, HEY, so thanks for all your help, you dingleberries!

Look what you made me do!

Ignore there not being anything there for now. I WANT YOU TO LOOK AT THOSE DIRECTORY STRUCTURES. Not only is it redundant, but it's not even consistently redundant!

And it's not just these. There are a couple hundred like this in various incarnations. Some are done correctly, others have 1-2 redundant layers like these ones. And some are even totally flat directory structures. So--I'm not screencapping this--"The Beach Boys" is 85 tracks from two different albums in no kind of order I care about.

I told you to come over and do this for me! This is your fault, you fucking assweeds!
