Most excellent Kev. We caught (and ate) a shitload of sand sea trout (commonly referred to as 'brown mullets' by the locals)
They were most excellent deep fried in cornmeal and buttermilk batter with a side of hushpuppies.
Also caught a shitload of these things..
spade fish, commonly referred to as "angel fish" by the locals
Also hooked several crab, a medium sized sting-ray, a sea turtley and an ominous looking puffer fish.
It was a great time for all!
VM I don't think I'll be back tracking to read the 988,565 posts since last week however.
Lees, I had a hell of a good time, thank yah!

988,562 Welcome back, Smilin! And not a moment too soon. Things are looking ugly for the gulf coast at the moment.
Did you keep the puffer fish?

Well just one really. Told the landlord about it. Maybe it will get fixed today.

Re: Countdown from one million thread
Minus,
The puffer fish being quite poisonous and too vicious to be removed safely from the hook was subsequently beaten to a pulp by a kindly lady fishing beside me on the pier there and then flipped into the ocean.
It may seem cruel to some, but there was no way I was going to try and remove that thing from the fishing pole. I did take a picture of it and will post that here when the pictures have been developed and then digitized.
I noticed the tropical storm they're getting down there. It was sobering to tour the island, remembering the way it was 8 years ago when we first visited, and what remains now after hurricane Katrina. Over 100 homes were destroyed by that storm.
The road is still washed out and many homes are still standing in ruin on the western side of the island. The home we were staying at was three streets in (originally) from the ocean, but now is front row with the two homes in front of it totally missing.
It looked like the western side of the island had been bombed is all I can say.

Re: Countdown from one million thread
988,559 Smilin, I noticed on that map you posted that you were right next to Bayou Labatre. Isn't that where Forrest Gump hit it big on the shrimp boat?

Re: Countdown from one million thread
Yep!
And theres a big sign when you enter the city that reads welcome to Forrest Gump country!
Hurricane Katrina essentially did the same thing in real life that the hurricane did in the Forrest Gump movie. All the fishing boats that remained in port were destroyed when Katrina hit. When we were there 8 years ago, you could set your clocks by the passing of shrimping boats. Now, sadly, I only saw one the whole week we were there. The ones that survived were the ones that evacuated the area and booked for the southern tip of Florida out maneuvering the path of Katrina.
Katrina also changed the shoreline drastically. Our favorite fishing spot shown to us by some locals was seriously changed by the tidal forces of Katrina. We didn't catch a single fish at the same spot 8 years ago, I had to go back for bait 3 times and 2 more coolers. *sigghhh* We did find a newer spot and of course there was the Dauphin Island fishing pier that I posted here as well.

No. My real name is not Chuck, and I have no F's in my real name. The F is a vestige from an old nick. This is the only place where it survives.
I like ChuckX. I'll think about it. Of course, my friends can call me Captain.

Re: Countdown from one million thread
Then you will be just Chuck, and there should never be a just Chuck, that would be a travesty, an inJUSTice.
988,551 ChuckX at least would be a brand name, wouldn't it? :wav:
Hey Liv, I went to get my teeth cleaned today and was going to ask about the toothbrush and when I went to ask I couldn't remember the name of it. Dang!
