Re: Simpsons Guess Who - Sign-up and PG
Ceptimus asked about a human male, is that legal or does human have to be separated from male? If it's legal I screwed up big time playing by my house rules, where we can't combine questions

It would be wise the separate the question, I think it unfair to ask two questions in one.

I was going to ask about that, actually. It's why I didn't reply right away, but then I got busy and only just had time to check again.

Yes, that is two questions in one. Nice try, cep. Please ask a single question.

It's not two questions in one. It only requires a single yes/no answer.

Re: Simpsons Guess Who - Sign-up and PG
Well yes, but I think it is really the combination of two questions into one. I think we should limit you to simple single property questions. I know I didn't mention it in the rules, but I think it is a good point. Although now that I think about it there is a built in balance, because the more specific your question is the less information you get with a no answer.
Ok since I didn't make that rule ahead of time I will let the question stand. So continue as you were, but I reserve the right to change my mind later if there is a problem.

Re: Simpsons Guess Who - Sign-up and PG
Is your character an adult human male with facial hair?
Is your character a bald/balding human male?
I don't know, seems like we could cull whole swaths with one question

Re: Simpsons Guess Who - Sign-up and PG
'Human male' = 'man'.
Do you think the question about facial hair was 'two questions in one'?
Does your character (unlike a can of Duff) have a face? If so, does that face have hair?
I think any question, no matter how complex, that can be answered with a simple yes/no, is not 'two questions in one'.

Re: Simpsons Guess Who - Sign-up and PG
Human male could also be a boy.
Human is one trait, male is a second trait, adult is a third. Yes, you could ask "Is the character a man" which would give you all three traits, and that would be clever of you and I shall be angry for not using it myself.

Re: Simpsons Guess Who - Sign-up and PG
The best you can ever do with one question is to eliminate half of the remaining characters. The optimum strategy is to frame your question in such a way that a 'yes' answer eliminates one half and a 'no' answer the other.
Sometimes this may involve a long question: 'Is your character a balding man with facial hair who is not wearing a blue shirt?'. But (IMO) that's still just one question.

Re: Simpsons Guess Who - Sign-up and PG
Cep is right on this. A question that is overly specific can eliminate a lot of candidates, but it is actually more likely to eliminate very few. (It is more likely that the right character is in the larger field.) So a lucky hit would be a big advantage, but that possible advantage is balanced by the likely hood of the least helpful answer.
So my official ruling is that there are no question restrictions.

Re: Simpsons Guess Who - Sign-up and PG
In my game with Kael, it got to the point where my answer allowed my character to be unambiguously identified but I'd only narrowed down Kael's character to one of two possibilities.
I had to make a guess as a 50% chance of winning was better than the certanty of losing on Kael's next play. Lucky for me, this time I guessed right.
I suppose there is an advantage in asking the first question - it means that after you've received say four answers and you're just giving your fourth answer to your opponent, you have the opportunity of deciding whether to guess or not.
By the way, for those of you who don't want to work it out my character was:

Re: Simpsons Guess Who - Sign-up and PG
I felt like I had to waste a question on the brown stubble-face, 'cause I wasn't sure if other players would count that as facial hair or not.
Still, you asked some good ones, and careful too. Well played.

Re: Simpsons Guess Who - Sign-up and PG
Yeah - I must admit I hadn't considered the brown area as facial hair till you asked the question. It didn't affect my original answer as there was obviously no doubt about my character's facial hair.
Perhaps we need some kind of agreement between players about the meanings of terms like 'facial hair' and 'clean shaven' as applied to the Simpson's characters.

Re: Simpsons Guess Who - Sign-up and PG
When someone is asking an ambiguous question, they could just list the characters they think it applies to, perhaps with the mod making the final call if the other player doesn't think the question really applies to all stated.

We could just agree that stubble is facial hair, or add "including stubble" to your question.
