It's an animated documentary about the Israeli occupation of Lebanon in 1982 by Israeli director Ari Folman. I can't recommend this enough! Watch it now!
I saw Cadillac Records a couple of days ago and I really liked it. Even stupid fucking Beyonce didn't annoy me too much. The best thing is the music, of course. Howlin' Wolf ftw.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I saw this movie last week called Tulpan which was supposed to be real good, but which I thought was pretty boring. So I was glad that some people still saw some good stuff, even though I had already seen all of them.
I forgot to mention, I saw The Onion Movie a few weeks back. I didn't even know it existed until I spotted it while thumbing past G4, so I TiVo'd it. It's your basic sketch/spoof collection with a flimsy framing device. A couple sketches were pretty funny (Steven Segal IS ... Cockpuncher), but it was mostly lameness. Not what I would've expected from the Onion team. Think MadTV on an off night.

A bit dated in that it embodies some of the unfortunate stereotypes of anime--why does everyone look Caucasian? Stirring music that drives you nuts . . . "we REALLY were not that supportive of WWII, no, not really"--but an overall decent rendition of the manga written by a Hiroshima survivor.
The problem is if you have read the Manga a lot is missing. The manga was more honest about complicity in WWII with organizing "citizens' brigades"--and the character's dad refusing to take it seriously and breaking it up with farting!--the Gen character buying into the war propaganda and all of that. It would be a lot to fit into 90 minute cartoon. It did a nice job of introducing radiation sickness--where Gen asks a passing soldier who complains of the cold in the heat why he sat in blood.
Remove that, you do have some very nice moments. It handles the destruction of Hiroshima very well, and the loss of his family--with "Mom" snapping nicely at certain parts over the insanity of it all.
Ultimately, it tries to be uplifting. If you wish a better treatment of children in war, you need to enter the dark place that is Grave of the Fireflies.
Yes, yes . . . YES! The only reason I had not seen it previously is I had the ending "spoiled" for me. Finally, I found the wonderful reconstructed DVD with interviews with Christopher Lee--what a gentleman--and a very funny Woodward.
Fantastic film if you have not seen it, especially if you avoided it because you know the ending. That is really not the ending. Very delightful.
Apparently there is a sequel of sorts in the works based on a very well received novel--Cowboys for Christ--which I am getting--written by the director.
Favorite Line:
Woodward: What about the One TRUE GOD?!!
Lee: He's dead. He had his chance but he, as you say, blew it.
I just watched Terminator Salvation. I happened to find it a fun movie. I happened to really enjoy Marcus's overall story arc. I thought it was satisfying. One thing that surprised me about the film was how the theater wasn't packed. I expected it to outdo Star Trek and I am shocked that it didn't.

Under no circumstances should Quentin Tarantino be allowed to befoul Star Trek.
I saw The Transporter and Wanted this weekend. I enjoyed them both. Good, solid action all around, despite the various truck-sized plot holes. Also Jason Statham is ever so dreamy.

A lot of the appeal of the Transporter films is the massive plot-holey goodness. They're like feature-length versions of the Blues Brothers car chase scene.

Saw Terminator: Salvation yesterday. Not bad. I'd been warned by some friends who saw it opening night that it was awful, so it may have been my low expectations that let me enjoy it. There are definitely a number of parts where you just have to sort of roll your eyes and suspend your disbelief, but it's an entertaining flick.
My biggest gripe is Skynet's appalling incompetence. If you're going to lure your target to a location and then kill him, why risk him getting away? Why not just put a big fucking bomb on that cell door, instead of throwing Ahnold Mk I at him?.

Sou and I went to see Manhunt, which is apparently the UK release name for the movie Rovdyr. It's a Norwegian horror film about some teens being hunted in the woods ala Deliverence. It was released in 2008 I think, but the local cinema was showing it for free, so we decided to check it out... along with about 12 other people. Huge theatre, 12 people, Norwegian subtitled movie that was labelled a cross betweem Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Deliverence. I mean, awesome, right?
They started the movie 30 mins late and then it had no voice audio, which is to say you could hear all the background noises, like car doors shutting, tree rustling, etc... but when they spoke.. nothing. Luckily it had subtitles, so I wasn't too worried But after 15 mins they shut it down and offered to let us see any other movie in the cinema for free. It was about 11pm by then, so only a few were about to start. We had Star Trek, Angels and Demons and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past to chose from. We had already seen Star Trek and both Sou and I don't like Mathew Mcoughghny so went to see A&D. It sucked, it sucked bad. It sucked much worse than Davinci Code. Liv, if you're reading this, high five yourself for skipping it, not even the lovely Rome settings could help. Awful.
I wish I had seen the MM movie, I wish twice as hard I had just saw Star Trek again.
Sock, would you recommend The Transporter sequels, then? I've read not so much good stuff about them. A lot of times with movies like this the success of the first film makes the sequels eschew the original simplicity in favor of fun-crushing intricacy and overall excess.
slim, you and Sou are too good to me. I know you picked A&D just to make me feel good about my choice, and I really appreciate the sacrifice.
I've only seen the first two Transporter flicks. Somebody (I think BroMan upthread) said the third was crap.
But y'see, what made me howl with laughter and enjoy the first film immensely was the wretched excess. I nearly woke up the neighborhood when it got to the bit where he parachute-drops onto the moving truck. The second film just takes that ridiculousness and ramps it up even higher, so to my mind, the criticism of a sequel's "overall excess" doesn't really apply to these films. If you go into Trannie2 thinking at any moment you might expect something to be remotely plausible, then by all means stay away. If you look at each ridiculous stunt and wonder how they're going to top it in ludicrosity the next time, then do check it out.
