I'm one of those weird people who didn't like Oblivion, although I loved Fallout 3, which uses the same engine. I guess I just don't have a lot of patience for generic fantasy settings any more.

Speaking of fantasy, I've been playing Fall From Heaven 2 during my lunch breaks lately, since it's one of the few games my laptop can handle. This is such an awesome mod...I can no longer imagine Civilization IV without elves and demons and mages and shit.

I also love Fallout 3 and didn't like Oblivion, Morrowind, or any of the other games in Bethesda's "billion acres of real estate populated by cardboard cutouts" genre.

So what exactly makes a fantasy setting "generic"?

That's a good question, and I'm not entirely sure how to answer. Some of it is probably just personal opinion of the "I know it when I see it" variety, but as a rough cut at describing what I'm talking about, if it's a sword and sorcery exercise set in something resembling Medieval Europe, and it clearly has roots in Tolkein and/or early Dungeons and Dragons, then it's probably generic fantasy.

I just finished replaying Secret of Mana for the SNES.

Once I've gotten over the fatigue that comes with the tedious activity of trying to get the ultimate armor and such, I'll move on to the (IMO far superior) sequel, Seiken Densetsu 3. I think the story and characters are more developed, the game play is more refined and less repetitive than Secret of Mana, and it has more replay value due to the class system and number of playable characters.

I really would appreciate it if Square would release an official English language version of the game, say on the Wii Virtual Console or for the DS (if not on virtual console, additional features/enhanced graphics etc. would be appreciated as always, of course).

As it is, I'll settle for playing it... other ways.

If you haven't played it (or Secret of Mana, for that matter), I suggest checking it out.

I still need to get around to playing SD3. I've had the damn translated rom for years.

Also, wtf is that in your avatar... I keep thinking you're someone else because you had that Mario one for so long.

That's a cool idea, but I'm pretty sure that, if I were to create an account, it would just stimulate my gamer OCD and I'd do nothing but game in a futile effort to purge my backlog.

Well, yeah, that's exactly what it's done to me

That and it's made me realize just how many games I've been buying lately :P

Oblivion is a great game, but you should look into mods to fix the stupid leveling system.

You increase your skill rating by using that particular skill. Each time you get 10 increases in your major skills, you gain a level, and can increase three of your attributes. But, you can only increase each attribute 1 + the number of skill increases in a skill influenced by that attribute, up to 5. So if all ten of your skill increases for a level are in blade, you can get +5 to strength, but only +1 for the other two attributes. Unless you are very careful about which skills you use as you level, you can't play on higher difficulties without getting your ass kicked because your attributes don't grow as quickly as they could, and you won't be able to get them very high before you run out of major skills to increase and can't level any more.

If you're slightly OCD like me, you end up grinding certain skills so that you don't accidentally level while doing fun things, but gain minimal benefit from it.

Yeah, this is why I have stopped playing RPGs as much.

They think that making it so there are hundreds of things to find that will take you a hundred hours to get makes the game better. But then I get all OCD and wanna get everything and trying to do that becomes very tedious so I find the game boring.

Old SNES RPGs and such had more manageable amounts of things to find, so I like them better than most of the new ones.

And if you're really OCD like me, you install a mod to adjust how you level, so it's much more sane.

Yeah. Another way is to make sure none of the skills you like to regularly use are Major skills, and that the ones you have as your Major skills cover all the attributes you need. But then you have two modes of playing: Actually playing vs grinding levels.

I will usually use console commands to make up for any discrepancies or difficulties caused by the system (which is something else you can't do on the 360 version).

I decided to download Runes of Magic today on a whim, which is a new free2play MMO from some developer in Taiwan or somewhere. Supposedly it's been getting pretty good reviews, with some going so far as to complain that it's too much like WoW. But see, I like WoW, and if this one is free and a lot like it... I tried to get into Guild Wars because it is free, but for some reason it just never clicked with me.

I'll let you know how it is... if the damn thing ever finishes updating.

Runes of Magic is fucking terrible. It's like, a WoW clone without content.
