I do NOT know what the hell this is, only that it was served at a local "restaurant" that celebrates the 2003 blackout with a "light out" event.

Yes, it is probably a Monte Cristo. I think I see a small metal container in the back. That would normally be used for some kind of fruit compote (usually raspberry :yuck:).

Monte Cristos are freaking heaven. I would allow myself one a year, tops. So sinfully good. Around here powdered sugar is always present, but the preserves are prickly pear. It is a meal you definitely want to share.

My favorite place that served them is out of business now, so it has been a couple years since I enjoyed one. I need to find a new source.

As a less unholy non-deep-fried version, Benagins had a panini version that was quite nice. They too are no more though.

I've never actually had one, but I've intended to for a long time. And I recently discovered that this is a life goal of The Little Muffin's as well.

What they are is just ham and cheese sandwiched between French toast, with OPTIONAL powdered sugar and jam for dippin'.

So hell, maybe I'll make some or something. The big dissonance with it, I guess, is probably the sweet-savory combination, which I sometimes have issues with because I don't really have much of a sweet tooth. But like gut-wise, it's probably no more daunting than having French toast and ham and cheese in the same day, which is a thing lots of people do. I can't imagine eating a whole lot else the day of eating one, but I eat a lot of things like that, so I'll try it.

If it kills Matlock, though, that's on you.

I like mine with turkey and honey ham. Lots of it. The meat in that pic in the OP looks skimpy. I am not a sweet toothed person either, but it is so nice. I am more of a dabber than a dipper, but it is not a step to skip.

Let us know how y'all's turns out. Matlock too of course.

I've only ever had Monte Christos at Disneyland- because supposedly that's the best in the world- and they are so, so good.

Maybe because of the way they are cooked, I decided that they, like Eggs Benedict, can only be eaten at certain establishments. I only eat Eggs Benedict at super nice restaurants, or if I make them here at home, because nothing is more disgusting than bad Eggs Benedict, and I imagine a bad Monte Christo is pretty awful.

I've had Monte Cristos a few times. They weren't particularly rare in NorCal restaurants. They always served them with jam/jelly on the side, which I never used on them. They also often had yucky canned pineapple slices in them, which I'd remove. I'm not one for sweet/savory combos myself; I just enjoyed the savory and heart-attack-inducing features.
