Thumbup Connecticut approves gay civil unions

Story here. Apparently, this makes Connecticut the first state to do so without a push from the judicial branch. They just went out and did it on their own.
Quote:
"The vote we cast today will reverberate around the country and it will send a wave of hope to many people, to thousands of people across the country," said Sen. Andrew McDonald, who is gay.
The law was signed by the governor, a Republican, who seems to represent a more moderate view than the president.
Quote:
"I have said all along that I believe in no discrimination of any kind, and I think that this bill accomplishes that, while at the same time preserving the traditional language that a marriage is between a man and a woman," Rell said.
Of course, the bigots are still out there:
Quote:
Brian Brown, head of the Family Institute of Connecticut, said his group intends to keep the issue squarely before the public.

"Our mission will be to let every person know in the state of Connecticut which lawmakers voted to redefine marriage, and which lawmakers voted to protect marriage," he said.
I say fine, keep the issue in front of the public. Then, in 6 months to a year when there have been no threats to heterosexual marriage the public will start wondering what the hell people like Brian Brown are all worried about.

I know, Shake. I still think that in the end it should be in the traditional language of a marriage, or they need to eliminate marriage altogether from the language of the law. Let us all (marrieds) be civil union partners in the eyes of the law, then I'll be down wit dat.

I don't know how any self-respecting heterosexual is going to be able to look into his/her spouse's eyes after this. Their marriage as they once knew it will simply never be the same. I expect we'll see a rash of heterosexual divorces following this change in the law.

I am happy to see that at least one state in fifty is actually decent enough to do the right thing given the political climate. I dont think that a law allowing marriage for gay couples would pass,
while civil unions arent quite the same, separate but equal aint fucking equal and all that
it is good to see that everywhere isnt like the great state of georgia where they passed an amendment by popular vote banning gay marriage.

Good point in your 'digression' there bey. I made that on II where I posted the same story. It ties in with what Beth said.

I'd love to see a bigger state like mine get in on the act. I mean, we did have that mayor of New Paltz, I believe, but that's no big metropolis.
