I had to work at a factory a few weeks ago. They made me watch boring videos about always wearing a high-vis vest and gloves, etc. etc.
Later, when I needed to inspect some equipment about forty feet up in the air, on the outside of a silo, they just pointed me at one of those scissor lift things and told me to get on with it. When I explained to them that I'd never been trained on driving a scissor lift, they said that it was easy and I could figure it out for myself.
Actually, they were right: the lift was dead easy to drive and I got the job done quickly, without hurting anyone. No doubt the official training course for using a machine like that would have taken a couple of days at least.
