I dunno. I went to the funeral of a family friend not too long ago. During the service, the mother of the young man who'd died was smiling and laughing as people told her stories about her son and how he'd touched their lives. Then she instantly started to cry when some boor said something to remind her than her son is dead.

Christine McKinley cohosts "Decoded" on the History Channel, and was on Live Wire! radio (about 41 minutes into the episode). She talked about people who had theories about catastrophes of all different kinds, then mentioned the scenario she found more likely than others, and then concerns about the breakdown of social order if, for example, the power is out for a month on an entire coast from an EMP due to a coronal mass ejection, like the one in 1859.

What I have done- and really I wasn't moved to action just knowing there could be a massive power outage or tsunami or super-volcanoes- I thought, "Well, you know, that would suck." When I really started to prepare and get a water purifier and more firearms than I already had, was when I started interviewing for this last episode, and I started interviewing people who are prepared. And- how do I put this delicately- the people who are prepared are not necessarily the ones you want in charge of your neighborhood. Right? So let's all of us here, like-minded people who don't believe, say, pre-Civil War Alabama was a fantastic way to live- let's us be ready, you know? I don't want the new warlord of my neighborhood to believe that you know, slavery, and women not leaving the house is a good idea, and I won't know if that's going to be the case until it's too late. I don't want to be bartering with him for food.

I'm not posting this to advocate gun ownership or disaster preparedness- though at the very least I see no problem with the latter- but rather to express my relief that I don't live in Jerome's neighborhood. I shudder to think about staying safe from the well-armed guy who thinks Vince Foster (among tens of others) was ordered murdered by the Clintons; HIV is a myth; anthropogenic global warming a faked conspiracy; LGBTQ issues around marriage and not being targeted for violence aren't really civil rights issues; Joe McCarthy didn't go far enough; Obama isn't legally the president but there is a conspiracy to repress the Birther Truth- and is secretly a socialist; and of course that Sandy Hook was staged and none of those people died because of a government conspiracy to grab the guns of the citizenry. That is not the person I want in a position of power anywhere.

It may be simply that the gun-nuts get the sound bites and I recall them, and there are plenty of gun-owners who have a firmer grasp of reality. Here's hoping.

Fyi, it is stated to the actors that the drill can suddenly become a "real-world emergency".

School shooting drills (any drills for emergencies) do not require imaginary dead children complete with fake funerals and whole towns involved in a conspiracy. They happen all the time.

I had earthquake and fire drills as a kid in SoCal. My mom lived on a Navy base as a kid in the 50's and they had atomic bomb drills.

You drill for emergencies that might happen to keep everyone from freezing in an emergency. And shootings at schools happen, they've happened since the 1700's, and schools have emergency response plans and do drills for active shooter scenarios.

Don't forget that during the London bombing they just happened to be running security drills that just happened to be the same places in which the real bombings took place at the same time.

Law enforcement drills and trains for active shooter events too. There is nothing weird here. We recently had a very public suicide, and the guy was initially waving his gun around in the middle of the intersection, and the police responded as if it was an active shooter...because that could have been the case.
